Axel your mate could try the Kangaroo Kit from Slavens racing. They are in stock per his website. He takes the KTM 300 kit and does some head work on it to help with running Australian fuel (Designed it with Robby Maddisons Dad I think). This is what I was going to do but he was out of stock at the time. US$899.
http://slavensracing.com/shop/slavens-kangaroo-250300-cylinder-kits-for-ktm-and-husaberg/G’day Axel. Sorry for the late reply. I ended up buying the KTM SXS 300 Kit (part number sxs12300100) from Country KTM in Tamworth. Best part about the kit is all new cylinder, cylinder head, power valve components, updated ignition and piston kit. The only additional items you need are spark plug and small end bearing. The assembly of the power valve was a 3 beer job. It wasn’t difficult but I just wanted to set the Z dimension correctly. Jeff Slavens has a good youtube clip on this. Then it is just a matter of popping the new piston on (I had a little trouble with the piston locking rings/circlips which can be a pain). I then slid the 3rd thickest base gasket on. Slid the cylinder on making sure the piston rings were correctly located. Checked the X dimension and all was good. Popped the head on, Spark, Ignition and put some coolant in. Kicked it through a few times with ignition off. Ignition on and it started 3rd or 4th kick. Awesome. I found the whole deal to be quite easy by taking my time. This was my first attempt at anything other than changing the oil on a DRZ. The bike ran ok during the first idle/heat cycle. Then I did a few small/easy runs but there was a lot of smoke/spooge and I fouled a plug. The bike had been jetted for a 250 with standard chamber/pipe, but now has 300 and FMF gnarly and Shorty pipe. Sent it to Bikes and Bits Tamworth and they changed the jetting. Took the bike out last weekend and it rips. Nice and crisp, pulls hard all they way and no spooge. Very happy with it. Cheers
Cheers Axel. I didn’t measure the o-ring before popping it in. Will do tonight. May even try a slightly thicker one maybe??
Thanks LC4skin. I had replaced the o-ring, new shaft seal ring and new spacer sleeve last night. So everything is new which is why I didn’t expect to see oil on the floor this morning. The old spacer sleeve I pulled had the tiny groove marks you mention hence I though replace the lot and I should be fine.
CheersHey Burnsy. I looked into this for my ktm 250. I contacted Millennium Technologies (Eric Gorr) in the US. They were very easy to deal with and helpful. I also contacted Electrosil, also great to talk to. To ship to the US and have it done (cylinder/piston kit etc) was cheaper and according to a very experienced 2 stroke builder, he would choose the US option (didn’t say anything bad about Electrosil – he just sends all his stuff o/s). Only problem is, it’s not supporting Aussie business. But I have no actual purchase/work quality feedback for you regarding Electrosil (have read good things online). I was also told Aurum Plating do the repair/re-plating as well. I actually found that purchasing a ktm hard parts 300 kit was not a whole lot more so I went with that option. Not sure if they have a similar thing for your 530. Best of luck and keep us up to date with the rebuild. Cheers
Yeh . I use these as well. They are great and last well. Any arm pump I get is because I am lazy. Well worth the money. Cheers
July 24, 2014 at 10:59 am in reply to: Would a ktm 250 sx cylinder (2012 onwards) fit a 2009 exc? #258660Thanks Ted300. I bought the bike a few weeks ago. On its first ride down to pump up the tyres the piston looks to have eating a piece of its ring or maybe something came up from the bottom end. What ever happened the cylinder ended up with some gouge marks. My options are to send it to get replated and piston kit. The bottom end will need to be done as I don’t want the thought of something in the bottom when I am 30km away from the ute and the local ktm said he could feel up and down movement of the crank. (the seller gave a receipt that totals a full rebuild only 30 hours ago but bikes are bikes) Just looking at other options as a replate and piston kit will be around 800 incl freight. KTM have an OEM 300 kit for 1250 and then I came across this 250 sx kit. With the kits the benefit is having new power valve parts etc. I will do some more research.
July 24, 2014 at 10:00 am in reply to: Would a ktm 250 sx cylinder (2012 onwards) fit a 2009 exc? #258638Thanks Ted300. I called to confirm what year the SX kit was and I stuffed up. It’s for 2012 to 2014. So I assume it will not fit. I changed the subject title from 2011 to 2012 onwards. Cheers.
Cheers Burnsy. The bike cant be ridden as I pulled it apart last night. I am just wondering if anyone has had success converting their 250 to a 300 or would it be best to stay 250. Also, I will need the cylinder repaired (if i stay 250) so can anyone recommend someone near Tamworth? Thanks
Thanks Axel.
Yes, by turn over I mean just running the full stroke not actually starting the motor. I guess I was just expecting more resistance but as this will be the first 2 stroke I have had in the shed it will all be a learning curve. The bike started after 3 Kicks on choke after being in the back of my ute from Sydney to Tamworth. I will look down the exhaust port. I assume I am looking for wear marks on the piston, the rings move freely and not a lot of blow by on the piston???. The reason I went 2 stroke is I wanted to have a go at the maintenance (and an excuse to have a heap of beers in the shed), but, at the end of the day I am happy to send it of to the people that actually know what they are doing and just make sure I am riding. CheersThanks for all the help guys. Murph I had put a 51 on the rear around 1000km ago without upgrading the guide. Looks like I will be ordering an aftermarket job this week. Again, thanks for the replys and it looks like the tractor gets a weekend off. Cheers
Better late than never.
This ride was simply awesome. I attached a vid (the clips may be a little out of order due to some stuff ups).
You couldn’t ask for a better ride or bunch of blokes to ride with. The planning that went into the weekend from all involved was very appreciated. Sit back an enjoy watching the tractor work its way through some great country.Great vid Boze. The bit at 10:36 still has me shitting myself as I pop out of the trees to see the big 530 front wheel coming for my head. I will hopefully have a vid up soon. Cheers
A great day started at Maccas for a drive-through breakfast, then on to our meeting place at 6:30am. The usual piss taking commenced on time as always. Boony’s new bike that was not blue was the topic that got everyone going. Good to see that Damus has the recovery ability of a 27 year old NRL player on “vitamins” after his get off not long ago. Headed to the Hills of Gold and upon arrival unloaded with a few new faces and new bikes. The morning weather was tipically Nundle, bloody awesome, cold and a bit damp from the rain we have had recently. The ride started with some singles that with the ground conditions meant you could plant your foot on a switch back, throttle, flick clutch and move a nice loamy patch of turf from the ground and into the rider behinds upper torso. This continued till I was given the chance to ride the new Sherco 300 4 stroke. I hate riding other mates bikes espically when they are brand spanking new. Mat hadn’t even finished offering me his ride before I had already started asking where the start button was. First impressions, bear in mind I ride a KLX400 and can’t ride to save myself, were – Light, bloody light. Compact and a feeling that given its lower ride height to what I am used to, a simple dab of the foot would save you from a possible piss taking. Great power too. Thanks Mat. We had a few flats, touch wood I haven’t had to take out the levers yet. We got to the Berry Patch for luch which is always great and very much appreciated. That’s when myself and one other (no names of course) thought we would grab a red fuel drum from the back of the shed to top up. Turns out after “the other” had put in 3 litres it was my turn. But after I popped in the first splash which was blue and smelt like diesel we had a closer look at what was penciled on the top of the red can. Yep “diesel”. So the ride back had a 450 and a 400 blowing smoke like the KTM 2 strokes. Smelt like farm machinery. The ride back from the berry patch is fantastic. Great grip and great single track. We had a crack at the new singles which have been very very very well cut in. Sh@t they have been cut in well. Loamy and bermed, I almost felt fast on them. Awesome. My day was cut a little short when I picked up a rock in the radiator. The best thing about riding with Old Bulls was that even though I knew the main road back to the cars I was chaperoned by the fine young bull Boony. Even if his bike isnt blue. Thanks to all for a great ride. Hats off to the leads and sweeps. Got to love the never ending Boony, Snowy, Buzz and everyones sh@t canning.
G’day Gents
Sorry it has taken so long to add my thoughts on our ride. Good old Gopro edit software has meant it has taken this long to put something together. Even now the clip is very poor. But anyway, the ride was awesome as always. Great group that had a great flow (between tube changes, all of which I was busy kicking rocks and looking at the ground). The lunch at the Berry Farm was great. Highlights were having Mat overtake me down parachute hill only to find he did it with a flat front. Really goes to show that I need to grow a pair or get a Sherco. I also enjoyed running into Boony (shortley after he removed some mud from the ground with his rear tyre and guess what…I was right behind him), chasing Andy through some singles, popping 4….maybe 5 foot wheelies trying to keep up with Boze and the other orange riders. All in all a great ride and I am ready for the next. Thanks to all involved. Cheers to the lead and sweep as always.
If you want to check a KTM getting it a little bit wrong on the way back to the cars just forward to the end of the youtube clip. cheers
