in reply to: Recreational rego in NSW #192241

i have to agree and dissaggree Scotty.

firstly, NSW should get with the times (and the rest of the modern world  ) and change its medievil registration system. it looks like as mentioned earlier, its set up for insurance purposes…so those bastards make a packet.
it seems your government dont want much to do with it.

down here in melbourne i pay $420 for full rego for my bike.
and that includes traffic accident insurance.
i still pay $400ish for vehicle insurance too.

rec rego is under $200 to get originally (must be inspected) and is then about $65 annually.

there are still a few requirements needed to gain rec rego, including a max noise level of 94dBA.

here are the requirements……(from vicroads website)

Recreation registration allows you to ride a motorcycle in certain areas without obtaining full registration.

    Eligibility
Any two-wheeled motorcycle can be registered as a recreation vehicle.

To operate a recreation vehicle you must be at least 18 years of age and you must also hold a motorcycle learner permit or licence to ride on a road.

    Minimum construction requirements
    All recreation motorcycles must have:
a rear vision mirror fitted to the right hand side
brakes fitted to both wheels, capable of working independently if one brake fails
    one head lamp
    one rear red tail lamp
    one rear red brake lamp
one rear white number plate lamp
a silencing device which restricts the noise level to 94 dBA or less
an appropriate horn or warning device wired into the motorcycle’s electrical system
a chain guard that protects the rider from the front chain sprocket

    IMPORTANT

All lighting used must be of a type intended for use on motorcycles.
A ‘total loss system’* power source for the lighting is not acceptable.
If a battery is fitted to the motorcycle, an integrated charging system, such as an alternator, is required.
Magneto driving lights are acceptable if a battery is not fitted.
    * A ‘Total loss’ system is one where the lights are powered in such a way that continuous power to the lights is not possible. For example, lights powered by batteries are not continuously rechargeable and can therefore run down. This is a safety measure to ensure that lighting is available to the rider when it is required.

    Conditions
There are a number of conditions applying to operating a recreation vehicle. They are:
Recreation motorcycles are only permitted to be operated on roads (except declared freeways and arterial roads, including roads formerly designated as forest roads, under the Road Management Act 2004) that are:
located outside “built up areas” as defined by speed zones of less than 100 km/h, or
those areas that are not a road and are solely for the training and assessment of a holder of a motorcycle learner permit by an organisation approved by VicRoads for that purpose
the vehicle must not carry any load or a person other than the rider
the rider must wear a protective helmet of the type approved under the Road Rules Victoria

i think in Vic, mostly people use rec rego for the cheap price. you are still covered by TAC with rec rego aswell.
as Scotty said, the unregoed wankers are also the unlicensed ones.
i dont see too many people buying motorcrossers and bothering to kit them for rec rego.
ive ridden with a few MXers fully kitted down here and they are all owned by legit bike riders and old racer types like Brucee. :)

in fact im rebuilding an ’89 YZ250 with a mate at the moment. he has had rec rego on that old weapon since…. well forever.
when you look at the cost of buying a headlight, taillight, horn, stator, brake switches etc, it gets a little pricey for the average yobbo who rides in reserves and shit.
my mates YZ has a ballards LED lighting kit which runs off the standard stator but i think that cost him $195 or something… it was a while ago.
why bother doing all that and riding unlicensed.

i still see unregoed bikes nearly everytime i ride in the local places around here. it is a $1000 worth of fines for unreg and unlicensed but that doesnt stop them.
nothing will unfortunately and they will always give us a bad name.

reserve riding down here is on the decline as the cops use the “Hoon” laws on those idiots.
first offence is 48 hours confiscation of bike and a fine.
second is a bigger fine and 30 days.
third is a bigger fine again and they will CRUSH your bike

maybe you could try a bit of that action on them Scotty  it might scare them enough :)

i dont believe rec rego in NSW will require a green slip either. from what im reading it will be modelled off the Vicroads system.
there is no green slip or RWC required ever down here.

i say go with it dudes, its cheaper.

if i could ride interstate with rec rego i would have it myself.

unfortunately it isnt recognised by any other state so i have to pay just to ride with you lot

    i have ridden Gotcha’s and Choppa’s 570’s.

they are a sweet bike, like riding my 300 but with big swinging balls tucked into the motor somewhere.

the 570 loves the super high speed driftys as much as i do
