    Here is what happened,Bruce.
    A Tribute to Doug Domokos

Doug Domokos, “The Wheelie King”, was killed in an ultralight aircraft accident on November 26, 2000. He was flying with his friend and instructor Keith Lamb. They were making a turn to reduce altitude at approximately 700 feet when the fabric in the wing ripped. This sent the aircraft into a spiral, causing the frame to fail at approximately 300 feet. They both died instantly upon impact. Doug was 44 years old and Keith was 49. Doug is survived by his fiance, Michelle and their two year old son, Nikolas.

Doug grew up in nearby Niles, Michigan and has a long history with RedBud. He worked at the old RedBud Cycle as a mechanic and began to craft his wheelie shows during intermission at the Friday night races in the late 1970s. After signing a factory deal and moving to California, Doug continued to hone his show and made a career of entertaining crowds, performing movie stunts and setting world records. He last performed at RedBud in 1998 for the 25th annual pro national.

If you ever saw Doug perform, you sensed something special. If you ever talked with him, his energy, attitude and philosophies touched you. We’ll miss his laugh, his sense of adventure and his friendship. And of course we’ll miss those amazing performances.

“The Wheelie King” – best known stunt motorcyclist in the 1980s & 1990s. His world record for the longest continuous wheelie of 145 miles stood for over 8 years.

The most incredible man on one wheel! “The Wheelie King” known for his mouth dropping displays of balance over gravity, has performed wheelies on almost everything, just about everywhere. Doug’s self made career has gotten him spots on national television, “Real TV”, “ESPN 2”, and “FOX TV” just to name a few. Doug has also made appearances in “Cannonball Run” doubling for Burt Convey, “Mega Force” doubling for Barry Bostwick, and in “On Any Sunday II” as himself in a documentary of all the superstar talents in the motorcycle world.

In 1981 I saw him wheelie around the very first Supercross track at Sydney showground.
