And so now the obvious question is … “why” did you sell it?

EDIT: just noticed your signature

Just felt like a change again and I did miss the 4 bangers. I miss whatever I don’t have. The Berg is a great bike and I’m liking riding it. It’s both more fun and less fun than the 300 in different ways.

Not mixing oil is awesome. Better fuel economy is awesome. More open trails and tar sections are much better. I can mono (a little bit) on the 4 stroke. The extra traction and mad torque is awesome. Smashing through the rocks is better than bouncing over them.

The weight isn’t awesome and as much as I thought having the engine braking is a good thing I think I prefer not having it. Did I mention the weight? :P

All round it’s easier to ride, especially when the going gets slippy. A decent rider will punt a 2 banger through the slop as good as anyone else, but, I’m old and decrepit so the lazy boy option with 566 cubes is how I roll now :(

So I’ve been pondering the piston, rings and bore situation today and have ended up buying a manual for the bike so I can find out what the recommended ring gap and piston-bore clearance should be.

Measuring up what I have I could take one of the pistons and use it for the other motor, replace the rings with the correct size and have the motor bored to suit the 1mm o/s from factory.

Anyway, whilst checking the ring end gap I notice that guy the had the bike before me has obviously mis-treated it (this was evident from the state of it anyway) as the ring end gap was 6+mm!! It would have had phark all compression and ridden like a slug!

He had issues getting it started when I bought it. With this and the fact you can see light across the length of one whole reed petal I think this would explain it!

Below is comparo of another ring from the other motor. Still a used ring but see the difference in thickness and see how the thin one is ovalized too:

    IMG_2999.jpg

Seat cover came off today, looks like someone has had a million goes at putting the previous one(s) on as there is no end of rusty staples in it. I’ve probably got hepatitis now.

Frame and swingarm are ready for shot blast and paint. I had to get the angle grinder on the chain to get it, and subsequently the swingarm off.

Wheels are having the tyres removed at the bike shop (haha :D) and I will pull the wheel down when I get them back. I then have to sand and tart up the rims ready and get them to Sydney for anodizing.

Top triple clamp is sanded and primed, awaiting paint.

Some other bits have been given the acid dip treatment with varying levels of success. Carbie has now gone almost black and furry. Might need to add a new Mikuni to the shopping list.

I’ll replace bolts where I can with high tensile Supercheap auto jobbies, haven’t decided of I’ll go the SS ones or the standard ones. I don’t like the bronze colour of the stock bolts, what ever happened to BZP???

Sanding the tank down is nothing short of nightmare too.

Hopefully the manual tells me what the weight and quantity of fork oil I’ll need as well as the motor specs.

Let Lefty listen to it, unless it pisses you off it’s likely not an issue. It will be a simple mod to the carbie, should take 5 minutes once you’ve got access to the carbie top pull the slide/needle out.

My 450 used to do it heaps on decel. My old VFR400R did it. My Triumph 675 did it with the twin Arrow Ti cans fitted too, loved it!

Wow, you guys need to find something interesting to do with your time. Tent talk. Really? There’s even specifications and ratings! :D

Can someone do a review on which camping cup is best please? Don’t forget the specifications, T6061 or T7075 alloy :D :D

Yeah, nice looking trails. I’ve only been in from Zig Zag end and we didn’t do too many singles but the trails out there were awesome. I’d be keen to go back for a ride.

If runs alright just leave it. It’s often not necessary to re-jet just for an exhaust. If it pops on decel it’s a smidge lean and may need go down a clip on the needle.

For the amount I spent in new parts I may as well have bought a new bike :D I’ve got a company in Sydney who will anodize my rims black for $80 though. Pretty good except I have to sand them down :( and then get them to South Sydney….doh!!

Getting the good swingarm off the other bike is royal pain in the ass! I’m a bit stuck as to what to do with pistons, rings and bore sizes too :(

Nah, I just did mods to make it better on the trail. I fitted a higher comp cylinder head which beef’d up the bottom end, fitted an SX CDI to help it rev a bit quicker (still not like an SX as the flywheel is much heavier on the EXC), jetting to suit.

I also had an FMF SST Pipe and Powercore II silencer which gave it a bit more eveywhere. Not long before I sold it I also dropped the cylinder 0.1mm which changes the port timing to provide more bottom end too. The reduced squish clearance also helps bump compression. It ripped, but pulled really stroing off the bottom just like a 4 banger.

    Still sad I sold it……..

I’m just going to give it to the local painter who I used to sub work to at my old job. He’s going to sand blast and 2 pack epoxy the frame and swingarm for $300 (as well as sand blast a few other bits).

Anyone know a good welder to run a weld or two and clean up the header of an old expansion chamber? I want to grind and re-weld and old, poor attempt at a repair too. It will be shotblasted clean and easy to work on.

The weekend before last on my scout loop for the mystery tour ride one of the guys couldn’t ride his new 300 Gas Gas up one of the rock ledges so he let Darran ride it up for him.

It was a 2 stage rock ledge. Darran rode up the first ledge but didn’t have the momentum to keep going so he back the bike up to edge of the ledge and then, to my amazement preceded to go off the ledge backawrds!! :-O

He busted the shiny FMF muffler of the kiddies bike he was riding, scratched the swingarm and cracked the right hand side radiator shroud. He says the front brake didn’t work when he went to stop. When I pulledd the bike off him the front brake was perfectly fine……
