The 39.55 for the 250F will be crank HP while I reckon the 250SX is wheel HP. Assuming they’re both flywheel HP the SX has more than 25% more power than the 250F
If you’re fit, can ride hard and have a loamy track I’d put my money on the 250SX. When grip remotely becomes a factor the SX will be harder to put a decent time on and will require more effort and energy to put the power down.
2 strokes are certainly fun to ride.
Razzle, it actually doesn’t take much to turn your bike into a 300SX. I had pretty much done those mods to my bike.

If anything you will lean the bike out and need to re-jet to suit as it will backfire on decel. And and and unless you are about one of 5 blokes in Australia than can ride a CRF450 for what its worth and what it brings to the table you will have worked out by now that it has more than enough poke for you, me and Moto put together

Do you see the irony though  You’ve got a modded airbox on your 650 and I modded the air box on my 450
At least we can say we’re speaking from experience! I was gonna mention about the power thing but we all like power if we can use it or not. The airbox mod is much more trouble than it’s worth though.
Channeling your efforts into sorting your suspension would be money and effort well spent.

LC4skin wrote:These days the 250f motocross bikes have just about as much power as a 250 2t and are easier to ride so they will still be more popular and win races.Back when 4t’s started to be pushed there was a gulf of difference in HP. The guy I ride with every weekend rides a 2003 250SX and it smashes my 300 in terms of outright power. The 300 makes over 50+ hp stock, way more than a stock MX250. The 250F’s go hard and they do have better traction but they DONT make the same power. It’s the whole reason as a 250 2t owner you have to race in 450F class.
I’m not talking about factory bikes where anything is possible when you can replace an engine after every race, I’m talking about stock for stock like you buy from the dealer.
Pete – All the big extreme races, Red Bull Last Man Standing, Erzberg, Wildwood Rock (in Aus) etc. are dominated by 2 strokes. They already have made a resurgance in the last few years.
I highly doubt they will truly come back to their former glory though.

Scotty – I have the ‘Follow Me’ DVD and it’s excellent if you haven’t seen it. I’ve got quite a few MTB DVD’s, you gotta love the flow and style of the MTB guys
I might have to blow the cobwebs of my Gaint and take her for a spin at Ourimbah!
I thought Honda were responsible for the big 4t push as they decided to stop making 2t’s first. It would seem that one for one reason or the other MA also decided to allow bigger capacity 4t’s to be put into the same class as 2t’s so the 4t’s could be competitve, without this ruling I’m sure 4t’s wouldn’t have taken off as they would have gotten whipped at every race (250 2t V 250 4t).
The 4t technology has come a long way and 2t hasn’t. The same technology written in the Gordon jennings 2t handbook in the 80’s is still 100% applicable today. We are on the verge on DI 2T’s but I don’t know how far it will go. It might be too little too late and unless the big guns like Honda and Yamaha start producing these bikes again I think the 2t’s will remain popular, but less so than 4t’s.
With the uprising of ‘extreme enduro’ 2t stroke sales have been increasing year on year and up until the 350F came out the 300 2t was KTM’s best selling bike.
I hope they continue the development of both, it’s always nice to have options.
I thought it would be alright for the frame though, it’s not really all that exposed. I’ll likely paint anyway to save some money.
Just bought the plastics, new spokes, Boyessen reeds, grips, Renthal bars, seat cover and new throttle assembly. A mob in Sydney will anodize the rims (black) for me if I clean them up.
I can’t get the clevis pin out of the lower shock/swingarm………don’t make me get the grinder out!
Rickybobby – Sorry but I’m definitely out of this ride. My sister is turining up from the UK on Sat, she works for Virgin Atlantic and has been rostered for a UK-Hong Kong-Sydney.
So I wont get to use my new tent, campchair, foam mat or riding jacket
Have a good weekend trippers……..

Looking at it as I was walking up, there is a reasonable line up most sections, so as long as you get in that it’s all good
I did think about powder coating but will likely just paint it myself after I get it blasted. Same with the motor, swingarm and any other bits such hubs etc.
WHat’s wrong with powder coating anyway?
Yeah I did see them. I don’t think the resto on the one I have will be too much hard work. Besides, Tyne said she wants to help so scrubbing the damn thing within millimetres of having no skin left on your hands can be her job
Down to the frame:

You can in one of the pics that I have started to sand the tank down, with a bit of work it will come up alright. Never heard of the peanut butter thing though!
I’ve got a 10 man tent and big fold out air bed and even a foam mat in case the airbed doesn’t fit in the tent
I’ve also got a camp chair this time too, oh the luxury!
I’ll get some food and snacks through the week and I should b sorted then.
