Yep you’re right T/B that smoker of pink cigars from that mag has been playing on my mind, here we are just abunch of old has beens and coulda beens, thinking beforehand and being considerate and measured in our advice and views, yet we’re not circulating a well known branded magazine founded by two legendary men and built by one of those men into a respectcable and believeable tome of our pastime, that was the epitome’ of fairplay and “tell it warts and all” GE spoke out against smoking in the 70s’ knowing full it would lose him a huge part of his advertising of the time, yet this current crew pander to the highest bidder, should just be renamed to “just another glossy sales brochure”.
On DK and the KX450, I was in effect trying to state what Austblue said, DK had been talking with kawasaki heavy industries for some time for sure.

I said it elsewhere I’ll state my opinion here,
I for one minute do not believe David Knight had to pull a privateer bike together, has anyone else seen the specs and photos of the KX450F he rode, WP suspension, Hinett Clutch advance fuel system, trick everything.. “Oh look someone left this totally tricked up competitive mega-buck race bike lying round, and wadda ya know it has my favourite suspension and it’s all dialled in for my massive frame too, guess if no-one else wants to use it I’ll borrow it for a race or two”. And that race happens to be the toughest race in the series, slap bang in the middle of the worlds most affluent bike buying public, who all love a good underdog story, and Kawasakis sales of KX/KLXs have been lagging somewhat, all co-incidence? I think not
Yeah right he’s been in talks with the green factory before he left BMVV.
And from Kawasakis Point of View “Oh look here’s a discarded current world champion enduro rider left lying about, and no-one wants him, poor bugger… oh well guess we could throw him a few baubles to help him back onto his feet” .

I’m interested in this Thumstar racing series, must be a money-spinner for the importers what with a new bike for every lap for every rider and all, mechanics with arc-welders on every corner, instead of Flaggies, and no way could you ever do a Lemans or cold start, the spectators would be back in bed fast asleep before they all started, and the noise, do you give out free hearing protection to all the surrounding farms?
Champo, how secure do you feel clearing the doubles on it, does your butt clench tighter than Mike Tysons cellmates’ knowing the rear shock mounts were welded by seagulls with sunglasses? These questions and more are boggling my mind.

Damn you Champo, china has the biggest motorcycle riding population in the world….not sure that many of them are off-road fanatics though, from what i gather their main roads are comparable to out S/T.

It broke, Wow that indicates a hardness, i woulda thought they just collapsed.
Should be heaps around the suspension would certain outlast most drivelines.

Wish I was, just on the oil issue alone I pay $60 for 4 litres of Mobils topline synth 2T oil, and use it at 40:1 so i have to use 160 litres of fuel to $60, yet what does 2 litres of the top line screamer oil cost and I am sure the lads change theirs before 13 tanks of fuel is used. Yet they stated the running costs with pre-mix would easily outwiegh the higher maintenance costs of the 4t… :pinch: Umm what about shims and oil filters and gasket materials and the oil itself here Boys, cause i am going to assume it was a couple of high school students in a P.A course that wrote the article.
Hey Mr Beatle, did you look at those ones on Bikepoint and Bikesales?, a couple of huskies and even a YZWR there. Either ones you can’t go wrong at all.

You’re on the money with Terrys’ know;edge of euros, he can even make a PDS work as well as a mid-nineties Jappa, and the forks he did for me were magic carpet ride stuff, pity he couldn’t fix the frame too.

Update-
Took the young fella out today to the “testing grounds” a few hundred hectares of short steep hillclimbs and river flats. I’ll use his words here.
“It’s heaps easier to control, it sounds like yours dad, doesn’t bog down anymore and you don’t have to scream it everywhere now”.
Now to the exciting bit as a Dad, he was doing 60 metre up hillclimbs that you couldn’t walk up, with little sharp lips and unrelenting slope, one of our co-riders looped his XR250 out on it. Brenton (my Lad) was initially doing it in second then he got game and was going up in third, not so special I hear you say, but he was using throttle control to prevent wheelspin and as the front wheel got too high he’d back off and then slip the clutch as he fed it some again, very much in control and totally confident. This in his own words was impossible 2 weeks ago he woulda flipped it or spun into a stop.
admittedly I have also made a few other changes , new alloy bars in the correct height and bend for him and the bike, gel grips, and a set of wide forged footpegs i had from one of my old CR250s, and a new front brake lever and perch, top end BMX stuff specially made for little peoples hands and a lighter pull setup for his clutch as well.
If I had a kid on a KX60 the silencer mod is the absolute first thing I’d do from now on.
I don’t think this silencer is alone just the dukz nutz, but the rather stock one is so poorly executed that a woolfilled cokecan would be better.BC
Ta Rat for the headsup I figured anyone with a nickname of Bear would be a Big Bloke, although I have a mate called “Mouse” who’s a bloody good size of a fella too anyway most big blokes have a good sense of humour and enjoy a good ribbing or two, or there wouldn’t be any other blokes left alive, or kids.
Again nice to make your virtual acquaintance Mr Bear, and a good bear belongs in the forest too.Bruce C.

a dt 80 or 100 with 125 engine in it here has the points behind the magneto?
or am i talking out of my muffler again?!?! i’ll have to go and look again!
either way i’ll be set straight;)
yer think you are right about the points behind the flywheel on the dt80 etc being two strokes they were there on my agg 100 sh*t box but my old xl350 had the points on the head being a 4stroke it was a oldy had the low slung pipe to
all good and true…..see there some Blokes here I can swap advice with and take seriously.
Now lets talk about cutting our guards and sidecovers down shaving the seat and getting some fully sik airtime eh?BC
on tappet cover area, left hand side at end of camshaft behind a little cover with 2/3 screws on it sits the points on many of the older thumpers. Idea is the camshaft spins at the right speed to allow points to open and close directly, and because regular adjustment/cleaning was necessary easy access as well.

Mick is right, I find the “just got the hang of it all” types telling all and sundry what’s what. Sorry buddy you may have done some internet research on your new-found obsession asnd been on a dozen organised trailrides, but can you describe how hard it is too kick over a TT500 when it’s being cranky, or where to find the points in an XL175?, or you can do a heel clicker over a static jump but can’t rail a rut or land from a 10′ drop off
When you answer me this and more my friend I will take you semi-seriously in the advice ring, after 39 years of riding almost daily for most of it, I will still consider the advice I dispense in case it gives the advicee the wrong information and in this sport that can maim or worse.
I’ve said it before I’ll say it again, hangin’ round here is like being at an after ride gathering shootin’ the breeze and bench racing, with a few mates who understand what you’re talking about.
