OK Mr Roy, the jet size is in tiny little numbers either on the head or on the side near the head end on most jets.
Each brand and model range of carb usually has jets percular to that range.

Pilot and air screw are idle

Fanatical that’s the nicest way to describe the 2 stroke owner in question

Ok I will admit to a bit of a soft spot for the 2 stroke motorbicycle, but I also like XRs…….
    and GSXRs
    the rest are pretty average…

Ollie is indeed correct all the symptoms you describe is that of a pilot jet too big, they do this ex-factory to ensure it works all over the country, from cold sea level to hot desert conditions.

Basic kiehin numbering system, have a look in the book see what size it is nd ask a few questions.

My YZ went from a #50 to a #40 to get it ultra crisp, 38 was too lean, even my old 300 (38mm carb, yours has 36mm) was jetted way too rich on both pilot and needle.

Glenn (mr Kasuyaho) is the only bloke I know who is as fanatical about his XR650 as you TB.

He tried talking me into one 3 years ago, thn 2 years ago you tried the same, must be something in them eh?

Ok I have done some official work yesterday afernoon and this morning on this and related subjects.

firstly-Qld solo seat, there is two routes to this as far as I am aware it is designated a solo ex-factory or you have it certified.

There are a couple of insurers who are willing to go outside of the current CTP “box” as it were if this gets approved.

This should negate the “greenslips are greenslips” issue.

I reckon only good will come of this, yes it will not solve world hunger or force peace in the middle east, but it should get quite a few more out of the illegal heap, into the insured & legal column

So does Solo rego in Qld, that’s my point, and why did it double overnight, I haven’t crashed my bike in the bush and made any claims and I don’t know anyone who has

add the rego & violia, not much change from $500, and a heck of a lot different from $200

I can’t see it happening and I don’t won’t it either. I’m happy with the set up as it is. I reckon if it did go ahead there would be heaps tighter rules and regs out in the bush.

As for Mr Blues statement…I aint never seen a yz250 walk past me 300 . I reckon I could ride ya YZ into the ground in half an hour out in the bush  The’re meant for motos and not trailriding that’s why ya can kill easy

Maybe style Dusty, I spent 12 years racing every weekend mostly and NT is mostly won in the dash to the first corner, so maybe rider but…… I have out & out drag raced 300s of all eras/450 enduros etc in a straight line and I owned a pre 36mm carb 300 with work and the plain fact is the light reciprocating mass, CR gearbox and higher Peak HP does what it is supposed to do, get you there first.
Not only that put a 300 rider on a YZ or RM250 for a bit in the bush and they will either love it, or as I was told by two recently (one a husky 250 owner and the other WR450 rider) Man that thing just beats you up, it is the absolute last bike you wanna get whiskey throttle on in the scrub.
This is why you are right, for most they don’t make a great enduro mount, too much too soon and outa control.

Now back to TBs Q, my bike was until recently QLD solo rego, around $200 a year, I let it lapse to get NSW rego when all the crud hit then fan and currently I am NOT riding in the bush until something is worked out cause simply I refuse to pay $500 in NSW, I’ll go back to QLD instead.

If MX bikes are so much better in the bush why do they make Enduro bikes with heavier flywheels, softer suspension and 18″ wheel?

    STM

Because some people need a bike that is slower revving, soft and bouncy with a high profile soft tyre, when I was young we used to call them “gumbies” and Old blokes, these days I call them mates (but some of them are still gumbies eh)

btw the way I have a YZ250 with a heavier flywheel, softer suspension, but a 19″ wheel, and it still walks all over EXCs, WRs & the like in acceleration and outright power, but can be a handful when you’re tired in tight going.

TB & I disagree in a civil manner over what the outcomes of this will be, with any luck in 12 months or so, one of us will be able to tell the other “told you so!”

Was telling Tb earlier, many moons ago i built the first registered fully engineered & legal Rotary engined swap in NSW, now the first engine was an extend port nad went well, however the second I put into the car was a periphial port and when finished and a huge system on it only pumped out around 220 and was peaky, so I took it to a bloke in QLD who was reigning sports sedan champ and he hand built a multiple reverse cone system using a dyno. Results 300= bhp and a much flatter torque curve, Alan Bond used similar systems on his Group A tourers as well.

As usual dirtbikes are the last to get this technology

A very knowledgeable 2t tech bloke recently told me that it is the oil that determines the mix ratio not the bike.

So whatever the oil manufacturer recommends is the go.

Little word of warning SOME self oilers have a bearing recess that will get no to very little oil from premix as the gallery is a bit funky in design, just check this out first, personally I’d use the self oil function once set up they’re pretty damn reliable on the old ER185.
