what goes wrong with the ones you rode with?
May I extend a cordial virtual G’day Cathi.
Probably the largest gathering of “second childhood” blokes anywhere in the country.
Actually most of us haven’t left the first one yet………….

I agree with Ollies’ logic on the GasGas 450, terrific bikes that once they worked the electrical gremlins out of the first few fuel inj systems, apparently the engines have a lazy torquey feel but still get up and bogey and the reliability of the engine internals is somewhat xr650like from most owners I have had a yarn with.
But I reckon if the KLX suits your needs, you could do much worse….

Quote:Bigger AL you certainly handled that KLX well on the ride that i saw. I think it all depends how much time you want to spend on maintainence. The current crop of KLX WR CRFX EXC etc certainly handle the type of riding like on the week end well but at a cost. I think i spend just as much time maintainng the thing as i do riding it. The DRZ certainly has filled the gapng hole that the XR 400 left(?WR450R where is it?). Although it still requires regular maintainence its really the only thing that you could live with on a daily ride that wouldnt keep you in the shed for every other hour. I sugest that you don’t only ride tat thing of Cory’s but do all the work on it too until his leg is fixed(and maybe a little longer). Dont know what Cory will think of that? If you ride the DRZ back to back with the KLX it is obvious which one you would like better but it is the other side of ownership that could change things.Try taking the KLX and the DRZ on the Camerons Corner ride and see who comes out on top?The KLX450 apparently requires far less maintenance than it’s comparable 450 brethren Aaron, KLX450 riders I have spoken with are talking DRZ like reliability and maintenance schedules.
Crikey did I just defend a 4T???
What did you used to like Al?
I take it, you are a man of “experience” like quite a few of us on here, however because we do it for fun, logic or even long term financial considerations should play a bit of a backseat in this arena.
Me I’m 44(ish) and i ride a rego’d YZ250 probably be faster on a 390 Berg, but mines way way more fun….
Oh and welcome
If I hadn’t been so slack on the weekend i woulda caught up with a few more of You blokes, my bad….

the 96/97/98 300 excs are a very very powerful 300 in the upper midrange and top end, when I had mine a mate had a 97 model and in a straight line it would eat mine up and spit it out, and yet the ’01/02/03 models have a far more agressive engine than the current crop, so I would venture to say possibly the late 90’s model were the most powerful of KTMs 300s.
Good solid bikes too, suspension is easy enough to set up and handle good in the scrub.
Yep the reliable old JVC camera with extra batteries will be in use for just such moments, much better clarity than helmet cams, so you’ll be able to see every wince and grimace in wonderful HD replays…………

😆
Why would you push a perfectly operational bike up a hill, isn’t it easier to ride it?
That’s what I’ve generally discovered, that’s sorta like having a dog and barking yourself…..
Boony you Tamworth Blokes are deadset strange, in a nice sort of warm and fuzzy way, but strange nonetheless…
And yep Mick just what I’ve been waiting for my whole life “Two fat blokes on the back of a BRP, hooting through the scrub, so one can stand there like a goose and wait for the occassional bike to roost him”…. Mmm can we throw a bullants nest in and we’ll have a deal.
How about sitting at the finish spot tallying up hands, and laughing at people….

Gunna be at Barry & Shirleys Farm around early evening friday, will have brekky with everyone sat morn, then Michael, you’d better put me to work.
Need any flagmen, card-handerouters, observers for tricky sections?
I’ve always wondered weather there’d be one heck of a sense of job staisfaction while doing the rounds, or if it’d just be another job.
I once applied to be a stay upright trainer, I think Warren Shubert got the job though… now that’d be horn
