If you were looking at the F650, I’d seriously consider the V-strom, two of the blokes here at work are pretty serious about their adventures and own mildly modded Stroms. One of them is an ex competitive trials rider and he loves it to pieces, they just don’t look as hard-core as the KTM or Tenears, but i’m assurred by both of them that they are very competent bikes, with good aftermarket bits around.

It’s great feeling, we used to live opposite some great people had kids the same age as ours, one day My mate from across the road is in my shed while I’m prepping the oldest kids’ BMX race bikes and we’re yapping away in comes Mr B just turned 4, with his little 12″ pavement bike. he grabs a 14mm spanner undoes the rear axle nuts pulls off his training wheels and puts the nuts back on and tightens them and anounces he is ready to ride with just 2 wheels. My mate Colins’ jaw was almost on the floor, told me “no way would his 4 yr old do that” I replied calmly “oh yeah he does that sorta thing all the time”. When Colin walked back over to his place in amazement I picked my little bloke up and gave him the biggest hug.
He’s still like it at 9 pumps up his own tyres, adjusts his own brakes, tightens the chain, helps me mix fuel etc, is currently assisting me do the topend rebuild on his bike and asks what everything is for and i usually show him then let him do it while i watch. His mates bring their bikes over for him to fix, he takes great pride in showing them how to put chains back on, adjust them, get wheels off so I can fix the punctures, change pedals, crank arms all that stuff.
If you make it fun Bundy, no negativity, you’ll have a shed mate for the rest of your life, and as your eyes and fingers go, he’ll do it for you.
Bonus, my young fella loves all things mechanical, so much so he does the mowing and whippersnippering at the drop of a hat.
that my friends is a huge bonus.

I agree the pipes always look like they forgot them in the design.
I didn’t realise the Ten Ear was that porky!! Oh and afaik they’ve been Ten Ears for 20 years not how ’bout a “tenner Ray”?

Not sure on the Tenere’ Tb, but a mate up the roads got one of the newer XT660s and it’s a fair dinkum stump-puller with an after market pipe and motarded. Nice subdued note too, always tell when he’s coming up the road, got a sound of it’s own.

Nice choice, they’ve got the heritage for sure

Yep, I agree TB, but somewhere in the back on my mind i remember Bill Mann telling me that you could break a skirt f the top of the piston was slapping side to side if the rings weren’t creating a good seal and the bore piston clearance was too great and the piston ends up rocking in the bore and seeing as the skirt doesn’t have a crown area to hold it together and is essentially thin it gives out first. But that is exactly what a cold motor is like anyway, so I’ll go with what you say big fella.

I cracked a skirt in #5 on a chevy small block once and it was definitely warmed up, was lucky and found it before it became an “electrical problem”.

Never done one on a bike though, just melted the crowns instead.

    Still lucky break Mick.

True, but don’t excessively worn rings contribute to some skirt failures as the piston slaps?

AB, don’t let it idle too long, but don’t put it under load for too long. Essentially sit on the bike keeping it at a quick idle until the radiators start to get a bit of heat, then ride gently for a little until it’s at operating temp. A good visual is to watch your exhaust, they run a lot cleaner when hot.

Mick I reckon in that case

    “ALL OF THE ABOVE”
    are contributing factors.

I wish that was the case, I’d be back on a 125 in a flash, those suckers handle…….

    but you’re still clowns.

BTW I’ve been watching them too, it feels like just a few months ago I was seeing them on the big-screen at the local club with satelite, enjoying a few beverages, while the local footy team hovered around me and my 3 silly mates wondering what was the attraction that had us whooping and a hollering.

(BTW remember the Statement that came from Hondas head race engineer around that time TB?)

Good pointy bits there Dick, both my children are well versed in warm-up of all things with an infernal combustion engine.

You are a smart Dick aren’t you, outside the square and all that.
