The venerable XR650R has always enjoyed it’s status as a cult bike, but in the hands of a noted local Author and Wauchopian politician it has at last found it’s true calling as that of an Underground Racebike.
Maybe after the Bomoto fiasco no-one is willing to be the first and cop any criticism and brand association. let’s face it the technology has been there for donkeys’ but no-one will step up.
We talk about it and make our demands vocal and maybe it will be sooner rather than later.
And all you manufacturers out there, I’m still waiting for my anti-gravity shoes they said would be around by the time I was an adult, this was a given, all the cartoons said so when I was 6. So get cracking you “measured release for profit” third world exploiting greedy capatalist oinkers, I want at least fuel injected 2T dirtbikes by next year

Once upon a time in the days of Snell88 our standards tests were actually more rigerous than those of the other developed nations, however these days I believe the helmet is on the other head. Snell and DOT approval ensures the helemt will actually exceed our dated AS/NZS rating, so a helemt with multiple approvals is the go.
Anyone know anything about the Airoh?

I have it on pretty good authority that if you have an accident and claim on insurance, yours or someone elses, that the insurance company will inspect your gear for A/S compliance. No compliance no insurance payment I believe.
Nice looking helmet though Ollie.
Probably some investigators/claims managers would have a shot at it Mal, but I’d like to see an insurance company prove that the an non AS1898 helmet was a contributing factor to an accident….
Yes your honour we the defence claim that the fact the helmet was Snell and DOT approved only made the car veer into the bike, furthermore we also believe the lack of standards approval sticker caused the bike to become wedged under the car
Technically you need to have the AS standard sticker for road use, but for elsewhere I have been told that MA/ANDRA/ etc now accept Snell and DOT instead

Mmm to a goofy footer that is natural Mr STM….
Cause being a leftie is completely natural………
Yeah yeah I know it’s just a term.
Helmets plain old wear out, the high impact foam inside (the bit that does the best work IMHO) gets compressed by your fat heads after a while and loses the correct fitment and some of its’ ability to help cushion aforesaid fat head.
I replace mine as soon as they
Get a decent knock (are you sure Boony had one of these in him?)
Get dropped onto hard surface
Start to get worn in the foamOh and if you need to put stickers on them, make sure they’re helmet stickers as some adhesives will stuff the shell.
Currently a Fox thing with skulls and shit in grey for offroad
and a Shoei roadie helmet in deep maroon with trick visors.sorta like TB although I have a thing for eye protection and goggles.

GOR is overrated these days, it’s helycon days are well behind it.
Apparently was the go back in the day of Triumph twins and CB750/4s before it become “the place”, sorta like the old putty road as well.
Mrs C. used to ride roadbikes, but dislikes dirtbikes and only occassionally rides her Quad so she can tag along and not miss out on the kids fun.
I think Mals’ idea is the best, it is often hard to teach those you love, they tend to ignore your advice or you get cranky with the lack of progress, so a professional or third party is the better way.

Hoppy Birfday Mr Rat,
Many more to go yet.

Bad stuff, good road, excellent rallies used to be held out there.
On the middle-aged roadie rider issue, we have an absolute legion of them coming out here on the weekends and a good portion of them are “Born again Bikers” you know (and there’s nothing wrong with this if you keep it real) kids left home always wanted a bike since getting their bike licence from the local copper 35 years ago and never riding since, so they go out and buy the latest (whichever type tickles them) and off they go.
To illustrate my point last weekend there was agroup on large Jappa sports bikes, matching leathers in the colours of their rides, latest blingy bits and polished everything, as I watched them leave the Cafe’ they were so wobbly and obviously uncomfortable i felt sorry for them, I was actually concerned one old fella on a GSXR1000 (yes I kid you not) was going to hit a parked car as he wobbled off up the road.As I write this I just found out one of my workmates, a beaut bloke who operates an excavator and helps everyone out at work a real doer, was the bloke who head-on’d a car at Umingar last week on a ride I heard about on the news. I believe he had just bought the bike as a chrissy present to himself and was on his first group ride, now in brisbane hospital with smashed pelvis legs, some head and spinals for good measure, poor bugger.
All of us are vunerable, but a modicum of good sense can help.

The compression formula isn’t as accurate on a smoker Mr 450, the primary and then secondary compression processes + the pipe effect tend to distort what should be.
Back to the burning Q at hand, I’m with Mr Rat, 170ish, if it is an accurate gauge cold indicates the lower end of “she’ll be right” zone for me, especially as you have tightened the dome clearance by using a thinner base gasket.
I have also had issues with Wiseco in the past, but I have been assurred by one and all that is in the past, still won’t use them though (once bitten and all that), I have also been caught out with different manufacturers rings and pistons, sometimes you never know until you try them together and check the clearance and fit.Just another quick query, is the powervalve linkage on yours sloppy and has slack in it Ollie?

I’ve thought very carefully about one myself after talking to a Yank whom had one fitted to his trick YZ250, still am considering it for S/T duties especially, des anyone know how well it like abuse, as in fanning the clutch to exit a corner when you’re a gear too high?
