One of the queensland/kiwis that occassionally comes down for a ride with the crew punts a full KLX650r through unltra snotty S/T like it’s a bmx bike, but then again big Bathy has insane bike skills he pivots it round on the spot 160+kgs of it with the dakar tank full, his Mum who probably pushing 60 rides a DR650 and his Dad has an XR650R as an old guys bike :) . Having said that Robo67 punts that YZ125wr of his at light speed in stuff that orienteers complain is too hard to traverse, obviously it all comes back to rider at least 90%, but give the fast rider a light and responsive bike in those conditions and good chance is he’ll go quicker yet, I know i do, except I’m not quick.

Good stuff Moto, Fundamentalist trailriding beckons you and your obviously tolerant Lady.

I see your future involves pre-mix… lots of pre-mixing and little maintenance and more riding and happy happy times.

The XR350R got rave reviews from memory from the (then) honest blokes at ADB, it’s only opposition was a little lacklustre turkey or two from yamaha and Suzuki, which were really commuter bikes with high mounted guards. Was a torquey beast but a bit slow revving and like all XRs (exception the 650R) was a hot running little hiefer.
I was a bit sold on them as a liveable 4T, but a KLX250 got me instead :X ..big mistake.

In dirt bikes it is generally recognised as less is more.

    More magnesium
    More titanium
    More plastics
    More $$$ for the priviledge.

Now while the weight may show a ‘mere” 20 kg weight disadvantage, I’ll warrant after pushing it for an hour in S/T it’ll feel like 100Kg difference.

You wouldn’t use a shire horse to do a cutting horses job.

Nor a thoroughbred to scale the himalayas.

Bruce makes a good point and it’s inspired me to give you some pointers on how you ‘bling’ your bike even more:

    > Spray your swingarm Orange with cans of awesome spray paint
    > Put those cool blue LED’s in your headlight
    > Put LED’ in the ends of your bars
    > Have a 5″ TFT dash screen displaying your revs as a graph, current gear selected and also have a built light that flashes when you need to change gear.
    > Get some fooly sik coloured tyres
    > Put a neon under your bash plate for those awesome night rides.
    > Fit air suspension to reduce ride height to 1mm when cruising the streets of Melb> Find a place to fit a doof doof

That’s about all I’ve got at the minute……

Moto that’s all his ideas gone at once now….

and some reflectors/LEDs on his brake discs….

Wasn’t the XL350 in a different era, that of my Fathers, as we had an old (was new then) XL350 farm bike when i was a kid.

I said you were the guru of KTM BLING BLINg Meance, but my dear Sir now i believe you have strayed into the realm of “boyracer”…. switches with lights WTF, drop it in the mud a fewtimes, loop out on a knarly rock infested mountain and will you be rushing to see if the switch made it through?? next you’ll be wanting a gear indicator dash (actually that’s not a bad idea).

There was an awesome CR/XR350 in Broken Hill i almost bought 3 years ago, was an ex-Thumpernats bike based on a ’92 honda CR250 frolling chassis and a XR350 powerplant, had been converted to single carb, and no they weren’t just a 250 with a bigger bore, but a ground up bike of they’re own. Very popular for a few years too.

I have no position on EFI on 4Ts, except it should have been done years ago.

I am waiting with baited breath for FI on 2Ts, and a linkage on the SX’s eh? this will be good.

What Tb said, plus both my Kids got the rear wheel up off the ground til they got used to how the throttle works in relation to the engine note, twist =rev noise, roll off = engine slow. Brakes were not a huge issue fortunately both of mine raced club and state BMX at age 4 so brakes were a bit easier, still the front brake was as TB said, then the witches hats in the backyard, with braking points, spend the time and don’t rush them make it fun and you’ll have a better chance of them sticking with it.
Positive reinforcement works well, unfortunately my daughter prefers Quads, and BMX

Time to go a teachin the young englishman’
My good man Mr Moto, the 100grams off each wheel is probably the most important weight loss a bike can get, cause it’s unsprung weight, the worst weight of all, gyros, undampened weight hydraulic weight all that stuff. The only thing I can hope for is they didn’t put the rims off the YZ on the EXC, they’re nowhere as durable as the older rims on my 300 were.

It was said that KTM copied the general look of Suzukis’ PE and Yamahas IT ranges from the 70s, I disagreed I think they all copied Ossa, and now without Ossa to copy KTM are lost in a world of constant asthetic reinvention, although it seems the 2010 range have settled into a rut somewhat.

maybe they’ve decided to give the designers a breather, to get to know their inner artiste’ and send them on a mystical journey to the great southern land to learn the ancient art of bling bling at the feet of the Guru known as “Meance”.

These boys at that level never race “privateer” current and former world champions at the top of their game can snap fingers and national distributors will trip over themselves in the rush to bring them into “the fold” of whichever colour they represent, thus creating a temporary illusion of “going it alone” and drumming up fan support…Moto your countryman Carl Fogarty was amaster at this illusion.
