I decided to see if the 28 ltr Safari tank which I bought for my DRZ 12 months ago actually fitted the bike. I have never needed it until now and thought I might be a good time to see if it was actually made for a DRZ

After a bit of persuasion the big tank was on and looking very beefy

I filled it to the brim and it was bang on 28 ltr, I was starting to wonder how an extra 20 kg would feel and handle. My first impressions when I wheeled the bike out of the shed were ‘bugger ,this feels way heavier than normal’ :(

I went for a very slow steady lap of my farm and within 100m was banging up the gears and feeling very confident indeed, I rode down to the gravel road at the end of the drive and pinned it . This is great news no negative difference at all and if anything the wind is deflected away from the legs by the flared front of the tank :woohoo: :woohoo:

The tank messing up the bikes handling has been quietly playing in the back of my mind since I got in on this trip so I’m now well happy :) :)

Yesturday STM suggested we ride one of the loops we will be doing on this ride, I didn’t need asking twice :woohoo:

We started near the caravan park that everyone is staying at and headed up a fire road, in no time we are in classic Coffs single track and that’s pretty much how it stayed. ;)

their was a good mix of hills, descents, logs , creek crossings, and fast flowing singles, with sections of fire road to get your breath back before erosion jumps and back to the singletrack.
This loop was really good fun and although it was very dry their was heaps of traction and only a small amount of dust.

Roll on November this ride is going to be awesome! :woohoo:

    Hey TB

I have been going through your list and am really happy to see mine is very similar, their are a couple of things I had forgotten that are on their too.

With the UHF radio I have no idea about these and any advice would be good?

also how much extra fuel are you carrying and what type of container?

    Talk about coincedence!!! :)

I have just finished reading this months TBAM and my thoughts of a big bore kit to improve my Drz and make more of an adventure bike have been put to rest.

Theirs a great section on how Steve Crombie set up a WR250R as and adventure bike and rode Datwin to Sydney via the Simpson desert ‘ easily’ ;)

    Nuff said :)

Next time your out riding Nick, take note of how often you have the throttle wound to the stops and are wishing it had more. I don’t think you will find it happening too much mate, especially off road. Just a thought ;)

your right their Jeffro I would never have it wound flat out off road. I was thinking more of the advantages of bigger bore bikes on adventure rides and wondering if I could acheive this with the lighter DRZ.

TB- I have fitted bigger bore kits to small engine road bikes in the past and it certainly wore then out quicker than if left alone but they were much higher revving 2 strokes so I didn’t know if this would apply to the Drz. Sounds like it would, and the whole point of owning the Drz is reliability. :)

    Cheers

After the tekniks treatment I am now really happy with this bike, it rides great, just looking at more fine tuning. Plus I just enjoy spending my hard earned on dirt bikes ;) :)
