The gearing isn’t that critical once you get around 14/42, 14/44, 15/44. Anything around that will be fine, I rode mine the other day for a quick run and wound it out to almost 150 before I backed off, that was pretty close to the limit. So going on Krusty’s workings, what I said is about right. 14/42 to 15/44 there is very little difference, only 0.2 of a kmh so don’t stress over it too much.
thanks guys for that explanation on gearing. I will be running 15/44 for sure now. I really don’t need to go more than 125kph at anytime so for this trip it sounds perfect and less chain wear sounds good too.
That’s another decision ticked off
Nick
Bloody hell my heads spinning!!
So are we saying 15/44 is going to wear better than 14/42 but have similar perfomance??Jeffro wrote:
Quote:1 front is roughly 3 rear Nick, I have changed mine to 14/42 and would have no worries about running to the corner at that.thanks jeffro you answered my question as I typed it?
That’s very reassuring , I like the sound of 14/42!!Trailboss wrote:

TB
that makes sense , I’ll go the 15 and get out the grinder
Are you saying the 42 rear was still good low down on the other Drz?
I have been on the gear commander and am still confused, what’s the equivalent to 15/44 with a 14 front ???
I was going 15/44 bit not totally sure as I’d like to keep the case saver and have been told a 15 won’t fit with it on ?

I will pick up the tent on Thursday and I’ll get some pics then, it’s a $780 tent that’s been copied exactly by Black Wolf and it’s $289 from them guys, it’s still much more than I thought I would spend on a tent but it will hopefully be doing lots more trips like this
the mattress however isn’t cheap ($300) but I need a good sleep almost as much as a beer after work!!
I also checked out multi fuel stoves, amazing, they run on any fuel , and as we have unleaded in the bikes I thought it would save on gas. I know Bollocks will be serving gourmet roadkill each day but the stove could be a good back up. !!

Could I be changed from swag to tent on the list
I went into the camping shop today and found an awesome tent which is smaller and way lighter than a sleeping bag, it needs no pegs and has a bucket base.
Also their was a matress the size of a coke can and as light that ends up 50mm thick with 4 layered compartments to stop the cold or heat from the ground. It can have a fitted sheet with a tech blanket which saves the need for a sleeping bag and is way lighter and smaller. Gold!!Very very nice
were you happy with first impressions? What brand of rack is that TB, looks well made. ??
After I broke my leg I lost a heap of muscle but it’s surprizing how quickly it comes back, swimming is great and then when it’s improved a lot I used a bosu ball, which is like a large ball cut in half and mounted to a plastic disc. This was excellant for strengthening my leg by just standing on it and balancing, then as the leg improved more stand on one leg then the other. This is obviously quite a way into the recovery but I still use it now as it’s great for keeping your balance and stabilizers in check.

NickI took some time off today to start getting the DRZ ready for the trip,
I fitted new wheel bearings front and rear and got a set of spares,
I replaced the blown seal from last weekend
Checked and tightened every nut and bolt
Full service and grease
worked out how my exsisting saddle bags would fit( not bad, might use em!)
got spare air filters and Motul oil
Fitted pivot pegzwhile at the bike shop I asked about tyres( here we go again)
there has been a new tyre thrown in the mix ‘a Mitas Dakar E-09’ does anyone know about them??
I also enquired on gearing and 15-44 was suggested ?? Anyone??
Also brake pads ,soft with spares or hard( with no rear brake feel!!)??
I looked at gel seats ( nice but heavy ) $199 and air hawk (small)$??I ‘m getting close to being organised but would welcome any thoughts on the above
