FWIW TB, the Transalp has 69,000km and still runs like a Swiss watch- real smooth and quiet engine and transmission.
The bike is clean and very few marks on it [no touch up work in evidence anywhere].
Good rego, new tyre on the front- near new rear.
New clutch, bike looks like it has only done road miles- not much dirt [if any at all].
Trading a bike I’ve owned from new and is still running bulletproof for a second hand high miler is the bit where I’m unsure, other than that the TA would go a step or two further towards where my current riding is heading.
EDIT:
Just noticed I posted this in the wrong section- mods, please feel free to move the thread to a more appropriate section. Thanks.Geez, instant feedback, fantastic- thanks all.
I will try to respond to bits of the replies to date.
The TA650 and the current version of the KLR seem to have close to the same ground clearance and dirt ability, the TA is faster and smoother on the tar.
I guess the smoothness of a twin over a single for long distance highway trips is something that appeals about the TA650 as well.
An earlier Tenere 660 would be good and I’m not sure if they have any inherent issues like the KLR does [the doohickey/balancer chain for one and oil burning as well on the newer models as well].
DR650 would be ok with some gearing changes to make it less tiring on the highway but it falls down for two up so it would have to go in the “second bike” category with keeping the Wee for the two up highway stuff.
And there lies the Pumpkin, right next to the DR.
Not quite some of the single trails you guys do TB [although I’m hoping to get more in to some of that as my skills improve].
The single trails I’m thinking of are more the bush walking tracks you find in the Blue Mountains in places, I’ve been up a few off Comleroy and Mountain Lagoon roads as well as off the Wheelbarrow Ridge Track.
Fire trails and four wheel drive tracks are something I want to explore both here and interstate as well.
An XR660R or a Tenere would probably almost do both the highway and dirt for me but not sure about the interstate and two up requirements.
Sadly the bank account has taken a beating over Christmas with a needed OS trip to visit Belinda’s parents who are not well, and it will suffer more in the coming months as well.
The Wee-Strom has to go to fund a replacement that can do both jobs, or maybe a cheap KLE500 will be able to do solo interstate including dirt and just keep the Wee for tar and two up with Belinda.toes wrote:Keep the v,I WOULD ask for 1500 to ride the honder.
Have you had to rebuild the v strom engine yet with 53 tho ks
cheers toesRebuild at 53,000km ??????
Shit, the DL650’s aren’t even run in at that- it just stepped up another notch in performance when it hit 50k.
There are some that are over the 400k/500k mark that have not yet had the heads off, I haven’t even done a valve adjustment yet.
Replaced first set of rear pads 4,000km ago, first chain and front sprocket 3,000km ago [still on the original rear sprocket and it still looks good].
Still on the original front pads and will get another 2,000km before they reach the wear groove limit.
Since September 09 have only spent on oil changes, fuel and tyres [other than what is listed above].It is ok on dirt roads and fantastic on highway touring [even two up and loaded] but lacks ground clearance on the single track stuff as well as not feeling very stable on the loose stuff [but part of it is my poor dirt skills, I can handle the KLR on single tracks and rough stuff reasonably well but the Wee scares me on dirt  ].
The TA650’s seem to handle about the same as a KLR on dirt but are happy at 120+ on the tar.
My old KLR is crap at 100/110 on tar and the new ones I’ve ridden don’t seem that much better on tar, they have also had suspension changes and been lowered compared to the older models so are not quit as good in the dirt.
ECKS-Man wrote:Nice bike mate! I’m enjoying my Vstrom 650, very smooth and quiet, enough herbs to ring my bells and cheap to run. I have the stock screen at the lowest setting and find bugger-all buffeting on my helmet until I reach speeds that would not be considered illegal on public roads (tested on closed roads on private property of course, you understand!). I find tipping my helmet forward (it is a ONE Industries Kombat MX-style helmet) gives me the least buffeting. I have not had any other issues so far.Mine is an 08 model and has barkbusters, bashplate, centre stand, heated grips, crash bars and top box. Running Tourance tyres at the moment, but will probably go to Anakee’s next (should be a while, the rear is almost new!).
I haven’t got comfortable enough with my bike yet to find the shortcomings of the suspension, so can’t comment on that.
Hope to see you on the road eh!
Cheers!
After you try the Anakees I bet you go back to the Tourance .
I get 15-18,000km out of a rear Tourance and roughly double on the front, although I usually tend to change them before they reach that.DRool wrote:Hi Steve, I am a member of Stromtroopers and posted over there.
No ABS, I hope I can live without it  .
I did a 700klm day in the saddle on the way home and did get a bit sore so will fit the gel pad I have and a sheepskin maybe and see how that goes.
The fork brace is on my list, I brought back pannier frames that I picked up from MTD at Wurtulla QLD for soft luggage, I was going to buy the Suzuki crash bars (would you recommend those or another brand?
The screen/buffeting I reckon will be fixed with an adjustment of the screen either in stock range or a Madstad bracket although I didn’t find it that bad.
Now your dilemawith finding a bike more dirt worthy but as good on the road, I can only think of the Tiger or Tenere. Do you have others on your list?
Thanks for your reply. SteveI have Givi crash bars and they are good [Suzuki dealer supplied when I bought the bike new], although I’ve never dropped the bike to test them out.
As for a Wee replacement, NOT a BMW [again] that’s for sure.
I’ve ridden a couple of Ten660’s and they would be a maybe.
I have also ridden a couple of new KLR’s and they won’t do either.
I looked at a Tiger XC the other day that was fully kitted out with luggage and all the goodies [didn’t get a ride], I could very quickly fall in love with one of those though I think.A later Transalp 650 would be an option perhaps.
I’ve had no nibbles on selling the Wee but I have looked at yet another old Transalp 600, the idea being to perhaps replace the old KLR with the old TA and keep the Wee for now.
Do you use the same user name over on Stromtrooper as here or are you known as something different?
Ock.
G’day Steve,
I have a white 09, they are very good but not as dirt capable as some seem to think- dirt roads yes, the tougher stuff- only if the rider has good dirt skills to start with.
And as mentioned, not enough ground clearance when it gets rough.Awesome for touring and commuting.
Super reliable, 50,000km + on mine and I swear it just kicked up another gear performance wise since the 50 came up.I have been looking at replacing mine with something a bit more dirt worthy but more capable on the highway than my old KLR.
It is starting to look like the Wee will stay and I will still try to look for something better than the KLR but still cheap. You didn’t get the ABS model by the look of it though?
Add a fork brace [cheap and good improvement], crash bars, panniers, you already have a bash plate.
The seat and the screen are two common topics of complaint, for me the seat has softened and I can now do up to 1000km in a day on it, the screen I have actually changed but I found the helmet made the difference rather than the screen when it comes to buffeting .
And join this forum if you haven’t already http://www.stromtrooper.com/australia-new-zealand/ an excellent resource and heaps of local members on it [some of them here as well as on ADV and offroadexplorer].
A pic of mine taken a year or so back.
It won’t take you long to get the urge to cover some miles on a decent road trip, I did 1000km in the first four days of buying mine [had to get the first service out of the way before a road trip 👿 ], then went for a 4,600km three state road trip- just to try it out you understand 👿
Enjoy the new bike Steve.
Cheers,
Ock. [aka Steve]Hi Muz,
Welcome.
I have yet to get out and catch up with some of the gang on here as I’m relatively new too.
I’m sure our paths will cross somewhere on a ride.
Cheers,
Ock.G’day Gary,
Welcome.
I work in the Hills shire and live out near Windsor.
I’m trying to get out on the trails and tracks up in the mountains and out through Colo area when I can.
Maybe we can hook up from time to time, I’m still getting my long lost dirt skills back so I’m not a motocrosser when I ride
I sometimes think I wouldn’t mind having a go at TRIALS riding as my low speed balance is fairly good- even though I’m “old”.
November 10, 2011 at 10:03 pm in reply to: ADV Ride – Sunday 13 Nov Windsor, 3 Ways, Howes, Laguna, Wato’s #211621I’m riding down to Canberra Saturday morning, returning home Saturday night.
Don’t think I would get away with doing a Sunday ride as well, too much to do at home.
Good to see Chris back on the road, and well done Mick.
Motorcyclists are a breed apart when it comes to helping others out in a bind.
Here is a handy link for travellers looking for a bit of work around Australia and lots of other useful info on it too [website belongs to a mate of mine].

BMSteve wrote:Hey Ock that sounds good as well, is there much riding down your way ?Hi Steve,
I’m at the best jump off point around. :woohoo:
A quick zoom up to Springwood, or down through Agness Banks and on through Penrith-Warragamba direction.
But better still, I’m just a stone’s throw [well maybe two throws] to the Bell’s Line- the Putty- or out to Wiseman’s and northward through St Albans.
Up to Kurrajong and then Comleroy road over the Colo River and many other tracks and trails through the mountains.
No shortage of dirt trails to ride [but I’m likely to get lost easily, need a GPS that can get me around in the bush]So you see I’ve got it all at my doorstep, whether it is tar or dirt.
Too many roads to play on, not enough time.
Ock.
I’m interested too.
Down near Windsor myself.
I have some varying days off during the week depending on my roster each month and am also up for some weekend stuff from time to time.
I’m also just getting back to dirt on an old KLR650, an 09 Wee-Strom resides alongside the KLR as well.

“What’s Wolfie barking at Janelle?”Careful you don’t get mistaken for a Yowie out on a camping trip one night.
My Mrs. is stressed too and wants to buy me one.
It is on the list now.
Gotta keep her happy.
