    Ollie,

Are the diesels on the ships two strokes?

Maybe the Navy should buy a drum of this Shell Rotella for evaluation on their big boats ;)

    nigel,
some used to be,the landing craft had 2 stroke Detroits but they are all based up north.Damn The majority of ships/boats use oil that is classed as OMD113 oil mineral detergent not sure what the rest is (mac?)might be alright in the TD hilux but I wouldnt put it in the thumper:laugh:

Chamging your oil is the the cheapest maintenance you can do I change mine about every 500km and I use Motul 5100 ester 10/50 for my old XR600 with approx 30 000km on the clock, and sorry Ollie but I think a reuseable filter is just begging for contamination problems if you don’t do it properly, compared to ” pull old filter out and throw over shoulder and put new clean filter in”. Thats just my thoughts.

Chicken Ol buddy I hear you load and clear, but one would assume that most trailriders, would have the CDF (common Dog F#%K)to know when the filter is clean!I mean to say do you clean your Airfilter or do you throw it away and replace it with one of those pre oiled jobs? Same Same if you ask me. just my thoughts Yamaha also have a bronze re-usable oil filter to replace the standard(re-cheap)oil filter

yeah TB I hear you,but say a normal ride will probably put about 4 hours on the meter,so three rides should cover it,btw I have now also fitted magnetic sump plugs as well just to help that bit more. The WR is probably a more highly stressed engine than the XR and the XR can get away with it (ie the Yam has 5 titanium valves shorter stroke, shim adjustment and revs to the beegeezus)the XR is the ol reliable tractor that plonks along all day.On a big ride like the three state ride where the revs would pretty much be constant and less clutch slipping involved I think I would be comfortable in an oil change possibly say every three days. But the WRF probably is not the right horse for the course in that situation, im thinking XR650,DR650,klx650,TTR Belgarda and KTM 640

hey Mick getting back to the subject of oil,1000 k’s seems a bit of a stretch, how is the oil condition at those k’s,I let my oil go a bit long on that last ride (18 hours) and it may have been what caused the clutch to s@#%t itself,I will now change it every 10 hours just to be sure.

Quote[I change the Oil every 1000km and at $65(at cost from distibutor) for 4 liters, it costs me $30 each change plus the cost of the filter.
My question is, do the RFVC engines really need such a high quality synthetic oil or would the engine benefit from a semi synthetic or even a mineral oil instead?Quote

Mick oils now a days a very good even the basic mineral oils,I have been advised by experts (shell technical guru) that they recommend a product called shell Rotella for my Yamaha because of the Rekluse clutch,it is a new product designed for two stroke diesels:woohoo:
but from all reports it makes a big difference, yet to try it but will soon.PS oil filters shouldnt be a concern now that you have a flash stainless steel re-usable job from me.
