Umm there seems to be a hiccup in my plans, the wife says I have to go to Port Macquarie and watch my daughter play soccer. Bloody hell I hate soccer. From there she will drag me around the shops, I hate shopping more than soccer.

    Hi Mick,

I’m with you 100% on the shopping mate – If they ever bring shopping in as an Olympic event get your money on my wife for the gold and it would be a coin toss as which of the two daughters would get the silver and bronze.
Fair dinkum – why do they like it so much ?  It gives me the shits.

    Hi Kram,

A mate and I have only just got into riding and chose the DR650 for a few reasons – cheap to buy, simple to work on and maintain, plenty of scope in terms of add-ons etc. Being novices neither of us are keen on riding the bitumen so I’d say we ride 95% trail mainly out the back of Anglesea (VIC) and up in the Mt Buller area. The trails behind Anglsea have a huge variety of surface type and there is plenty of sand. We are both working toward a Cape York trip as well and are using the Anglesea trails to improve our sand riding skills.
We’ve both gone with the 14/44 combo on the DRs and find it a lot easier to ride in the tighter trails than the stock gearing. Got both sprockets through Vince Strang and found his recommendations spot on – very happy with the results.

    Hope this helps

    Cheers

Great thread – been pissin’ myself !

    Hi Rainorschine,

Not a lot of experience from my end (very new here as well) and I’m probably very biased but I love my DR for a lot of reasons. Cheap to buy, very simple, cheap and easy to maintain, heaps of farkles to suit it to your needs and in my opinion a very capable machine in most conditions. They have heaps of low down grunt and handle the bitumen cruising at 110k all day with ease. A bit heavy on the tight single trails and the suspension certainly needs upgrading and a bigger fuel tank for the big trips (on my list when the funds are available) but overall a great adventure bike.

Best of luck with your choice of beast mate

    Paul
