Mick Debreceny donated a chain guide roller today and Gittoes showed up with some beer and was actually full of some good ideas, instead of just more beer. I turned the roller down a little in the lathe and extended the bottom peg mount bolt and TaDa, sloppy chain be gone.
Took the bike out for a test ride, the exhaust screams when accelerating and the chain guide roller screams when decelerating, but it works, and I am happy, I will try to get new bearings for it in the morning. I checked my speed tonight, 60 is 10,000rpm, 80 is 12,000.

Spent three hours sorting the rear wheel bearings tonight, wasn’t planning on that. Changed the oil, installed the sprockets and chain, put the plastics on and wheeled it out of the shed. Finally took it for a test ride. Really strange riding something that revs as hard as this thing, I went for a ride at 10:00 tonight and I know I woke everybody in the neighbourhood. Originally this thing cruised at 120kph @12,000 RPM, now 80kph @ 12,000RPM, 40kph is about 6,000RPM, sounds like your ringing its neck but your only just off idle, lol.
Ok, that’s the good news, now for the bad, goes great, until you try to pass 14,000RPM, then it just falls flat, won’t rev any harder, I’m hoping it might just be sparkplugs.
The other thing is I need some kind of spring loaded chain follower on the bottom side or the chain will definitely come off.

Up date on the FZwhy, been working away on the scrapper, as they say, 90% complete, 90% to go. Mounted the front guard, key switch, horn, fuel tank, and the left foot peg. Finished all the wiring and lights. Changed the front master cylinder so it is 100% Brembo front brakes, and mounted the new bars. Have the chain and front sprocket, and that’s where I have run into a problem, I ordered the rear sprocket 11 days ago from (fill in blank),
was told one week, ring them today, they haven’t even made it yet, and can’t tell me when they will get to it, isn’t that wonderful, before they get my money, it’s, “we’ll have it for you in a week” after they get paid its, ” well, we’ll get to it when we get to it” I’m just irked at the moment, I was hoping to get the sprocket this week and test ride this thing over the weekend as I don’t even know if the clutch works. So that’s the update, the bike is pretty much ready except for the rear sprocket. The photo shows the new short little kickstand and the most important bit of fabrication work, the Scrapheap Adventure Ride 5 Stickers are on:)
All good, all parts are ordered, I’m so excited, barring any major catastrophes, this is going to happen. Time to do the important stuff and do some fund raising, that is what this is all about. A big thank you goes out to Gittoes for his major contributions and to Mick Deb for his contributions, ideas and support. Parts should all be here by the end of next week:)
Bike looks great Boony, if I can get the rear sprocket ordered by Friday I should see you there, be great to catch up, I am going to have to cram in some major fund raising over the next few weeks as well.
Does anyone know if I need a green slip for this event rego?
Finished the fuel tank tonight, welding .6 mm thin steel is not that much fun, had the Tig turned down so low I had to wear reading glasses to see the weld puddle. The piece of steel used to patch the fuel tank came frame a Ford bonnet so that would make this a Yamaha, TM, Ford Hybrid, lol. After welding the tank I kicked it around the shop and cleaned the weld then filled it with dye, and leak tested it for an hour, all good and ready for fuel. After this I bet I could weld the crack in your ass if you can stand the pain:) oh and I only lost two litres of fuel with this little chop leaving 10 litres of fuel capacity.

Cut the fuel tank to fit tonight, I lost exactly 2 litres in capacity, not to bad, I thought I would loose a lot more. I still have ten litres to play with. It’s pretty busy under the tank cover with the rear shock tower, fuel tank and air box, now with some luck I can get the tank to hold fuel again:)

Oh, and cut the fuel tank in half.
Spent the whole day on the scrapper. Getting close now, brakes are done, fairing mounts are all done. Only things left are front guard mount, left rear set mount, sprockets, chain, battery, and a straight set of low rise bars. I lowered the rear suspension a bit, but after planting my fat ass in the pilot seat I think I will raise it back up. Can’t wait to test ride this thing.

Well, the FZwhy lives again. It runs, for the first time in over three years. I spent over an hour cranking it over, desperately trying to get it to start without removing the carbies, while Mick sat there, drinking beer, leg in a cast, giggling at my futility. Finally I gave in to the inevitable conclusion that mick was correct, I had no choice, the carbies had to come off. After removing the bowls I found that the idle jets were plugged, the main jets were plugged, the in between jets were plugged, the up jets were plugged, the down jets were plugged, the New York Jets were plugged, hell, even the Sharks were plugged (let’s see who gets that reference) what I’m getting at is that everything was plugged solid, but with a couple wires from a wire brush, an oxy tip cleaning set, and three hours of poking holes, the carbies were back on and the bike fired right up.
Yamaha adventure touring:) 50% finished , 97% unfinished.

Small step closer, has an engine now:)

after a bit of research, expensive option ,buy a TM.steel sprocket and a FZR and mate them,
They make a 57 tooth rear for them. that’s one way to get round the problem.
the odd size front sprocket does not help. They make a 520 front sprocket for the FZR and I can get a 65 tooth 520 rear sprocket made to fit the wheel, in Victoria, problem is it is $159 , ouch!
