My cousin and I have placed deposits for 2 X Red DCT’s – hopefully for January 2016 delivery? It’s a bit of a gamble to buy a new bike from info gained from theoretical specification sheets but we trust the brand – having owned about 20 or more Honda off road bikes since 1970 between us.
For a cheap experiment I’d try dropping 1 tooth less on the front sprocket (for say $35.00 outlay) and making 2nd & 3rd gears a bit more useable on the faster technical stuff.
Hi Andy
My best guess is the car is a late 1940’s Plymouth, but I’m NO expert.
Thanks TB
Montana it is then.
Hi Nick
I bought an XL500S brand new in about 1981. It was certainly up there with one of the worst handling motor cycles I have ever owned ( and I have had more than 25 dirt bikes) due to the difficulty in obtaining a decent 23″ knobby front tyre then (now time it will be a real challenge). The stock road/trail tyre was hopeless on fast gravel roads – constantly understeering and very difficult to slide around fast corners and when I fitted a knobby it wasn’t a heap better. I also had one of the 1st XR 500R’s at the same time and all though it was a bit of a pig by modern day bikes – it was heaps better than the XL500S at cornering.
My suggestion is to bite the bullet and get or re-spoke a 21″ wheel.
Ok. Simple and cheap solution. Thanks, I’ll give it a go.
Hi Adam
What is Ollie’s hand brake idea on steep hills?
I use a Rekluse Left Hand Rear Brake as well as retaining the original hydraulic Berg clutch. It’s a bit cumbersome at first to get used to the 2 levers on the left bar but I really only used the OME clutch on rare occasions when I need more revs than actual speed.
Smally’s comment that he only wanted to hear from TRAILRIDERS amused me. I maybe over 60 but I still trail ride 20 to 25 days per year ( now only a grade 3/3.5 rider instead of a 4++) and have worn out over 25 trail bikes in the last 45 odd years and have ridden virtually every track & Fire Road the Bega Valley and 100 km and beyond.
Besides the Husaberg FE 570 I also have a fully optioned geared down (12/53T) Christini DS 450 all wheel drive with a Rekluse Z start Pro clutch and LHRB – mounted Chainsaw etc etc for the real snotty stuff.
Hi Smally
I have done 7500 km (190 Hrs) with a EXP Core 2 Rekluse clutch fitted to my 2012 Husaberg FE 570 and except for the annoying rattle and shudder just above idle when taking off up hill some times, it’s been Ok to date. I did however, fry a set of the fibre plates at about 3500 to 4000 km when I had to slip the clutch lot when I had no option but to push and walk beside the Berg out of a steep and loose 300 m long up a non-track slope in mid summer when the engine temp gauge showed 127 Deg C.
It also slips a bit in higher gears when the engine oil has not reached full operation temp – after the engine heats up its all good. This was my first adventure ride with Old Bulls and my cousin Phil (XR 400M) and I (Husaberg 570) had a blast despite the shitty weather. We loved the open tacky surfaces from Hotham to Dargo – not so much the freezing conditions from Omeo to Hotham though.
TB Lefty Chicken & the rest of the crew did a great job even though the weather was not on any bodies side but what can you do – just get on with the ride.
I had a serious go from Buchan back to Jindabyne and was the first home. It was a great ride.
Thanks to all concerned and all the other rider participants for a great long weekend.
Well be back !!Ross

On any day of the big ride will we have to pre plan to take your own lunches etc or can we purchase refreshments somewhere on the route each day? I assume that day 2 will be in Dargo around lunch time so that question will be easily catered for.
Also is there any chance that the support vehicles can carry a small amount of our luggage to the overnight accommodation (at an additional cost of course) ?
Cheers
RossPoint taken. I mainly was just wondered about the consequences of a “driver/rider at fault” accident claim using non compliant tyres.
Are the D 952’s road legal? The D 908’s are I think and may last longer the justify the price difference.
Thanks TB
I just checked out the D 952 on the net and it looks OK. I haven’t considered this option until now.
Buy the way 1500 km from D606 is they still have about 5 mm tread in the centre of the tyre but there next to useless at that stage on rocky hill country.
I also run the 4 mm Extra Heavy Duty Bridgestone tubes front & rear the help eliminate pinch flats on the 2012 Berg and full moose tubes on my 2013 DS 450 Christini 2WD. (Still awaiting ARD rego compliance)
On some tyres I have used in the past I have ripped 15 knobs of a non road approved rear knobby in 70 km mainly off road ride last year and had to though the tyre away. Very expensive $$/km ride that was.

Didn’t I see a 7 + min video of some of the Pre Ride posted early this morning to encourage participation in this ride? Where has it gone now?
By the way my “friend” on the ride will be my cousin Phil Moffitt – just returned to Aus from a month in Wales visiting family. He is also an old bloke like me but very quick for his age.
Thanks TB. I can’t work out where it is on Google earth without knowing the area. I haven’t ridden the Kowen area for 35 years and its changed a lot since then.
