I met one of the owners of these beasts through a guy at work.
His bike is a work of art, he was out at Finke with us, I caught him as he came out of the Desert Edge fuel stop, great having all that power, although for the average rider it wasn’t doing him any favours, he hung with me a while at my slow pace in the whoops then dropped off.
He had a few dramas with fuel vapourising, still finished Finke & got a spike.
Badbowie & I have been running them on the current WR’s & the previous, they are heaps better than standard, miles better than aftermarket (we chewed UFO brand in 400km).
Got the complete kit with disc protector on both bikes

After years of working & getting my hands dirty I’ve started to work smarter & use one of these with a grease gun when packing bearings. Works on head set bearings as well! (same as wheel bearings… most…)
http://www.vektools.com.au/powerbuilt-bearing-packer-p-6195.html
Kinchrome make one as well
I spoke with Tryhard at the Xmas ride about his 530, he thinks it’s more like a tractor than a 450 that likes to rev.
It showed on a hill we were helping people through, Rocket & Tryhard just idled through on the 530’s where the smaller bikes needed a few more revs to get them through.
He also said it doesn’t have the hit that a 450 has in the mid range.
As for WR’s, reliable is the best word to describe them (we’ve got an 07 with 13000k), don’t excel anywhere, great alround package (magazines still say so). Most Yamaha dealers I wouldn’t feed.
KTM’s price on OEM parts is a little inflated compared to most other brands. Yamaha aren’t far off.

Quote:The only thing with the CRF is the air filters.
we were told by GHR when we went to finke. (they only fit brand new filters because of the fine dust)TB
The fine dust still went through new Unifilters at Finke this year, no dramas checked the valves today & still the same as before Finke.
At around $5K a customer bike at Finke why would they bother cleaning filters, it would cost them more in labour, materials space in the truck than buying new filters at wholesale.
It was no different at the 09 Condo750, new filters all round.
As for what bike, I’ve ridden a 450x (Condo) & would say it is very much the same to ride as my WR only red in colour.
Was a top day out, Thanks Twobanger.
I hadn’t ridden out there for a while, the tracks are rougher than ever, the ruts deeper as well, must be a heap of people with no idea how to ride.
The small bursts of rain were refreshing, no dust.
I’d never nad a flat on the trail (touch wood) got to try my CO inflator & realised the guage on my pump starts at 20PSI while getting twobanger up & running again
As Twobanger was limited with fuel my odometer showed 102k for the day of mainly single trail, with the odd fire trail to link with.

Quote:That is interesting to know stuart I will check mine now. I have noticed a nasty chatter while under hard acceleration in the chain on the wr of late. A quick side to side action. When I first noticed it I stoped and realised I had tightened th axle on the right side with the block away from the bolt. I moved it and it reduced it significantly. I will measure it and straighten to see if it helps. Thanks mate! But what if they are wrong can you buy new ones or take to them with the die grinder? We’ve got pins that locate in the axle & swingarm bolt, then measure with a tape measure. (I’ll post a pic later this week)
Remember the holes are different sizes on each end of the axle, (maybe the swingarm as well)take that into account when measuring.
I read it on another forum & it took me 12months to get around to checking if it was true. Proper alignment should prolong sprocket & chain life.
Chatter may be the chain slider needs regluing (sikaflex) a common WR problem. (tighten your chain with a screwdriver between the chain & rear sprocket for tension, will help keep the axle blocks hard on the bolts)

Quote:Why are snail cams not used on my wr. Iam sure my mx 100 had one years ago, so i spose it is no a munufacturer thing. What are the bad things about them? I remember them being simple back in the day. Getting the bolt type lined up perfectly is a bit of a pain. Other manufacturers could still use them I just have not payed enough attention. I will from now on.The WR axle Blocks are crap, the markings are different spacing left to right.
If you measure between the axle & swingarm bolt there will be a difference of 3-4mm when you think it’s all lined up

Count me in twobanger, as long as it isn’t Thursday, could only do a morning ride then
I don’t know much about the D22 as I own a D40 Diesel with 130000km on it,
I do know the power & torque figures for a D40 look good on paper, people will say they get good fuel economy, sure they do, Just don’t tow or load it up.
A D22 with 30kw less power & 100nm less torque than a D40 it would be a disapointment on the road.
D22’s are small, extremely tight in the back, not for adults, where as a D40 is a respectable size.
Not what you want, we have a VW T5 Transporter same power & torque figures as the D40, makes both in a totally different way. Doesn’t feel our enlosed trailer on the back & we averaged 10L/100km to Alice Springs with all our gear for Finke, The D40 would have used heaps more even an empty trailerfeels like a big weight hanging off the back.
D40’s have 3000kg tow capacity, great just don’t try a hillstart with a 2.5t wake boat, it will need low range to get going even on slight grades, embarassing at traffic lights.

Quote:Perfect timing. I’m working at Smithtown on Thursday night, can take my bike up and stay over Friday.I don’t think the mighty DR650 will cut in the single trail though. As soon as it sees multiple bumps it turns into a bucking bronko.
Might be time to look for another enduro bike.
These rides are too go to pass up.
Have fun fellas.
You’d be able to handle it on the DR, not much single track up there, a couple of big hills might challenge the highway gearing on the DR
