The torque instructions say torque up the 3 torque steps, remove bolts & grease, torque to ………NM then 1/2 turn after that. what bs you need to break the gasket seal & lift the barrel to remove the bolts.

Just torqued them up, then the 1/2 turn so good so far.

I fitted Genuine Yamaha parts, felt a lot happier using circlips rather than wire like my old two strokes had.

There is an alternative to a ring compressor, fit the piston to the barrel, then fit the piston with barrel to the con rod.

    Makes it easy 19042010332.jpg

SB_250y’s 450, of the 3000kms racing klms half wouldn’t be top gear and it would have got an oil change every 500kms at the most if not every 240kms at each end of finke etc. With touring oil changes would be much more then that.

    TB

Yes the oil gets changed @ each end, wouldn’t like to do many more k’s without an oil change as the oil is black as & stinks, still only do a filter every 2nd oil change no matter what the interval.

I have been wondering what the average life expectancy of the new age 4 stroke engines is. I have an 09 WR450, I purchased this after selling my BMW 1200 GSA. But lately I have been getting the long distance bug again. After looking around on the net, magazines and the like I have noticed a growing number of people kitting out their 450’s with long range tanks and heading off on safari or long distance tours. This is exactly what I want to do. (But not to the extent that I used to on the Beemer, sometimes 1000+ klms a day). Just some good 1 or 2 day rides.

So my question is, how long can I expect my engine to last? 5k, 10k, 15k?????

I am very fussy with clean oil, oil filters and air cleaners.

    Thanks.

My 09WR450 has done 3000km ++ with some hard riding, 2 x Yellow Mountains, Club Enduros, & Finke to name a few, did a topend check & replaced piston & rings earlier this year. Was like new all within spec, just a light deglaze & put it back together. This bike has been held wide open for long periods, flat changed & looked after mechanically.

Fitted a Cush Drive rear hub earlier this year & it has taken all the harshness out of the bike, noticeable at all speeds.

Rumour is a WR450 without Cush Drive can’t handle a Safari, Fit a Cush & it does it easily.

My previous 05 & badbowies 04 had done their fair share of k’s with no problems

I would have thought the original titanium valves would of just needed a gring & Lap to go with the new seats

Do you think grip heaters would be useful on this ride ?

just pay particular attention to how and where you mount the resistor. I have noticed a few people have had problems with the resistor or resistors ends breaking. Take the time mount it properly and its happy days. Oh yeah also put a couple of layers of heat shrink on the left side bar, heat shrink it on nice and tight, then stick the grip heater pad on and then the grip. This insulates the metal bar and the grip will operate at the same temperature as the throttle heated grip which is insulated by plastic throttle tube

    Hope that makes sense

    TB

I’ve got these on my & the GF’s Roadies

    http://www.symtec-inc.com/MOTORCYCLE-GRIP-WARMER-KITS_c_36.html

I think they are much better than any locally sourced heater elements

    No Resistor
Elements are different for the throttle & clutch side, makes up for the heat sink of the bar without the throttle for insulation.

I’ve got heatshrink under the clutch side & it is hotter than the throttle side now.

They work, 2 weeks in Tasmania in the rain was a good test

Buy a couple of sets & combine shipping & they are great value

What’s with your mate smoken, I’ve never heard of a bloke that can be so unlucky to get muliple flats in multiple years at Yellow Mountain or is he covering for not acheiving the result he is after?

My WR450 saw 158 on the speedo, translated to 150 on the GPS max speed on the way to Condo, couldn’t be bothered carrying it for the return trip although seeing my times it would have been interesting to compare, running 14/50 with a 120/90 ED12, last year saw 149 GPS on a M404 110/100.

Accelerates quick to 140 then need to tuck to get the rest,135-140 speed is comfortable & the bike felt like it could sit there all day.

I finished 49th this year, had an average run to Condo, dicing with badbowie until he a had a big off, .

Sunday Morning felt at one with the bike & made the return trip 20 mins quicker, passing heaps of people & not being passed.

The track was better through areas where there would have been bulldust, big bogholes that sucked your bike in all up a great event

I am looking at a Garmin eTrex Legend HCx Handheld GPS its a colour screen and has a heap of other features the old one didnt.

Peoples input and thought is sort and appreciated thanks

As stated above I’ve got the all bells & whistles Garmin Extrex Vista HCX, I think all it has over the Legend is the altimeter.

Downside is if you are to run from 12v power like I did for over 2weeks touring Tasmania on the Roadie the power connection is from a mini USB Connection & the power socket has a 12v-3v reduction. This connection compromises the Waterproof side of the unit & I don’t know how it would go with a lot of vibration. It also chews batteries unless you turn all the features off, bonus of 12v power is constant backlight

I looked at the 60CSx or whatever they were after buying mine & it has a better socket for the 12v connection (more robust)& maybe runs on direct 12v (don’t quote me). Essentially the Highend Etrex & 60 series Garmins are the same software in two different housings albeit the 60 has a larger screen.

If I was to buy again between the two it wouldn’t be the Etrex.

I realise you have the Etex mount already, small price for a new mount for a more robust GPS

reckon you saved a dollar but a bit steep this year

The price did go up this year, they have included transponders in the price, when compared to the two other events I’ve been to this year it is excellent value for the riding & backup.

Finke was near on $800 for entry & Club Fuel

Hattah was $200 for one days riding, then you had to factor in accom.

Yellow Mountain free camping, they transport your fuel for free & the last two years a stubby holder was included in the entry, if you break down they’ll pick you up & transport you & your bike to the finish, no time cut off.

Finke if you break down in the Supp Regs it is your responsibitily to get support, sweeps will check on you & report your position , however no guarantee of a pick up.

Neither Hattah or Finke gave you anything of value in the entry pack.

Even Sunny Corner is $140 this year, I rate the terrain & riding much higher at Yellow Mountain

I have the Garmin 60CSx which I have been very happy with until it recently started turning itself off all the time. I am told that if I run it off a 12v outlet instead of Batteries the problem will be solved but am yet to try it.
When it was working I found it quite easy to use.

I had the same problem with my Etrex Vista HCX, a firmware upgrade from the Garmin site fixed it’s tendancy to turn off for no reason.

I only use it for logging tracks, has heaps of features, just can’t be bothered with them

Must not do them anymore in a 17″

Last year Desert Edge in Alice Springs had a heap of 17″ deserts in stock… and thats what they were trying to sell us when we needed tyres.

Its an old page but I did find this. Click on sizes

:( oh well would have been nice the T63 will have to do the job, looks similar ;)

    TB

Knew I’d seen 17″ Desert’s somewhere recently, although I don’t believe they are worth this much.

A local Husky dealer said he could do 18″Deserts for $160ish in the lead up to Finke

TB, a 908rr is over rated & over priced, you can buy 3 606’s & have change

Thought my Desert’s kept the dust out, until I did Finke, I don’t think any goggle would keep that dust out.
