Well done SB…….great effort, should be very proud of yourself.

It would great to hear all the details of what goes on one day, what you’d do differently etc.

    Top stuff

    Crash

Plus 1 for what Crash said :)

I will buy the beers for a de-brief at the pub would love an insight into how it was from the horses mouth ;)

Was that your foot on the video SB? There was some sticks sticking out of people during the event  That will be something I will take out of it as I will be riding around there next year (ADV riding that is)

    You home yet?

    TB

We’re just home from the airport now, on Perth time so still acouple of hours till bed.

I haven’t watched any of the videos other than the one played at presentation.

    Cograts on the finish SB.

Nice job, what next on the bucket list?

    Thanks Mal

Safari 2011 was a tough event, mentally & physically. With the biggest competitive section of 320 km’s after lunch on day 3 & following a morning 230 km competitive it was areal test. As much as I was glad to be at the finish I would of been happy to do a couple more days. ( in perspective it would be the same as racing Sydney to Nambucca heads over rough farm tracks & trails then doing a another 200km of trail & roads to get home in one day.)

I was seeded each morning to start either before or after Anny Seel, she is an awesome woman & rider, to be competitve with her is an achievment in itself.

Top speed of the honda was 164k with a tail wind, the first stage on the last day started straight into a long straight about 10k long and sat the bike up there for most of it.

Safari, I would recommend to anyone to do at least once.

Yes I’m riding tomorrow, was near the end of special when I tried the emergency radio out. Helicoptered out, stick removed & a couple of stitches & a few pain killers & I,ll be back amongst it.

Starting from P 27 so i don’t need to pass slow riders.

Huge day coming up with over 500k competitive, hopefully ankle will hold up.

No thanks, I’ll stay with a lighter bike than a BRP for my riding

Finaly got it all back together and started 3rd kick, once I hooked the battery back up….

Had to replace the linkage bearings while I was at it and fitted a new chain and sprokets.

Off to race a pony express tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

Wallaroi would be a good track to run your bike in on, would have liked to have been out there myself.

I’ve done a seat recover with a mechanical stapler & 5mm staples bought from Bunnings.

Had no problem getting them in, just hold the stapler hard against the seat base so it isn,t forced away when stapling

I was using some Thor brand gloves for a while but they stretched easily and bunched up in my hand.

sb250y put me onto the Fox Bomber gloves. They are a bit expensive but seem really strong and super comfy so far. I’ve had them for about 6 months now.

    http://www.bikebiz.com.au/products/Fox-Bomber-Gloves-Black-2011.html

I’m currently using Fox Platinums, single layer palm minimises bunching & reducing blisters, they too are at the premium end of the glove scale. Although I managed to pick a couple of pairs up 60% of retail locally to be used on a small ride I’ve got coming up in the next couple of weeks

Small ride the australian safari eh? You might need more than one pair as you are riding a Honda ( more powerful than a WR :P ) I read your blurp on the GHR site

    Good luck

Nick learn to tuck your hands up when you crash mate  Gloves are a very personal thing I reckon best pair I have ever had were a pair of shift ones. SB is right about the bunching especially for long stints like the safari. Gloves are like helmets different shapes, wants, uses, expectations etc
I have a couple of pairs of thors they are ok, with so many new ones around and ones I like getting superseded it’s hard ti recommend
Will watch with interest as to what you buy and if you like them will get the same B) (unless they are like the trillion dollar goggles or the billion dollar ADV gloves  :P )

    Thread Hi jack

It’s a low key affair, I don’t need to sell myself to anyone.

Anyway I ride a WR that hasn’t ever needed a Mac Gyver moment & the rest of the stuff is B/S, I’ll just stick the the facts.

Their media man hasn’t posted my photo up yet either.

    On Topic

I’ve packed 4 pairs of Platinums, 2 pairs of Polar Paws for early morning transports & a pair of ADV gloves & 4 pairs kevlar liners (the reason behind wearing Platinums). Think I’ve got it all covered.

    Thread hi jack

It was your little hints on the site (tonights was the 2nd I spotted) that reminded me and started me looking at the GHR site. I reckoned it was the penguins hype that had done the media thing    On your 40th and a finish would be awesome. They are a few off us here that watch the safari with interest all days it’s on and having someone we know in it will be good. As you know I kept in touch with your bro at the condo as Crash and I like the big races. And they are the team to do it with I reckon bike brand aside being on the power of dreams is just a bonus

On topic as you put it ;)

You seem to have all your bases covered as far as the safari goes, are they the Ballards Kevlar inners? Do you find they bunch? I tried them years ago when I went to the Cape

    TB

Ballards, Bikebiz, MCAS all the kevlars are the same brand, think the secret is to wear new tight fitting Kevlars & ditch them when they stretch.

I wore a set of Dirt Paws once after wearing Platinums, felt as though I had oversized grips fitted.

badbowie & I’ve worn them since his first Finke, no blisters as yet.

The Media man posted up their riders list on ADV in the 2011 thread

badbowie got a deal on Progrip gear 12 months ago, he said it was good gear.

Recently I bought the 2011 pant & jersey, no gloves. Seem that the quality has dropped alot in 12 months, if I wear the gear I bought it would be a once off as it is such average quality.

If these are the glove I’d stay away as the match the other crap I bought cheap

Unfortunately I’ve got bigger things starting that weekend, although if I was around I’d be heading to Condobolin for some the best riding second to Yellow Mountain.

Day 3 saw us up a 5.45am and it wasn’t long

Once at Taylors Arm we had a look at the famous Pub With No Beer and got going to Bello. The start of the Bello road had a sign saying ‘ Road Closed Indefinitely’ , we decided to find out if their was a way through on the bikes.
We got past the first land slip with an edge that dropped off into the rain forest below. I’m not great with heights on the bike and as I lead on after the first drop off I took it very steady indeed. The next landslide was huge and the whole road was gone, their was no way round this and again

    Nick

There is a road that runs from near the fire shed at Missabotti north over to Bellingen, it rejoins the road you were on just prior to Bellingen. Even my Shonkymaps shows it

You could almost take a Commodore up it.

We’ve ridden it a couple of times, would have been better than the highway

Thanks for all the advice i think hitting the bigger bike shop and trying different ones sounds like the way to go. I will add to this post on the one i buy and the reason i brought it.

I went to most shops in the Sydney Western suburbs looking for the Alpine Stars BNS.

None had one of any size in stock.

Plenty had the Bionic not the BNS

One shop offered to get one special order ie: pay for it hoping it will fit with no refund, they could have put it out & resold it easily.

We bought 2 plus some other gear from OS with Flat $25 shipping.

Would have bought locally if I could of gone in & walked out with what I wanted as they were only $50 more here than the US.

I recently changed from a ZacSpeed with their own compatible pressure suit. Needed modifications ie: remove the plastic shoulder cups as they restricted movement. Other than that it has been a great bit of gear & works with a Leatt

SB how did you mod the shoulders? Its a real pain getting the Leatt locked under the shouler covers.

No problem on mine locking the Leatt in like I showed you.

I made mods to the exotec jacket, removed the plastic protection from the shouler (unstitched) leaving only the padded shoulders. You can see in the last photos on the link that it fowls the shoulder protection of the Zac Speed itself.
