I started thinking what had gone wrong and who had pulled a 80km wheelie through suburbia as my name is all over this ride. Apart from the sweeps and local pre-runners I already thanked on the Saturday night I want to give a big shout out to Dude who really deserves the OBT spirit award and Spud for his contributions. The two of them exemplify what it means to be a member of OBT and are two of the many reasons I love being a part of this website.

    Good onya boys!!!

Aaron must have parked his 450 too close to my 650! Now, what am I going to do with a 250? Yeehaa

    Crash

Crash my 450 is actually a 250! You now have the best bike ever!!
That was the other funny thing that happened on Sunday. We met up with another group of riders that were having bike troubles. I decided to open my big mouth and ask was it a KTM  :P He then quickly replied “No it is a CRF 250X ” I don’t know if he saw me coming but it sure shut me up  So many funny memories now sadly lost with those neurons now obliterated by alcohol !!! I think I had a great weekend!

    Funny story there Aaron
I come out of a section of single leading the crew and there are 8 other blokes sitting on a fire road with their bikes turned off. You rarely see anyone else out here and as soon as I shut mine down one of the guys asked me if I had a Jap plug spanner. I did and gave it too him but as we had waited for Sam’s KTM (insert 10 KTM riders saying that they never break down) I wanted to keep moving and told the guy were I lived and that he could drop it in the letter box.

It is easy to sit at home and say “That doesn’t look that hard” but that shot of the Widow Maker should silenece the critics. It is one nasty slab of rock that takes a lot of commitment for the average trail rider to commit to. We had 42 blokes at the bottom and only about 8 even tried and only 2 made it!!!
OBT did get some revenge on Sunday though.

How far up the widow did Mal 5.1 ‘can ride’ get King?

Great report and pics / vids lads. Awesome quality pics from that camera Mal 5.1 ‘can ride’. The widow shot is scarey and must be more so in the flesh!

    Galey

Mal made some valiant attempts at the Widow Maker but lost traction on the steepest point and took about $2000 resale off that beautiful bike of his.

With Lefty back in the group I headed back down Ridge Runner. It had been good on the way up but often after 42 other bikes the trails can start to chop up but this was not an issue today. It was in better shape than on the way up as the top surface had been turned over and bike groomed. There was a foot wide line of grippy loam snaking off down the ridge and every turn had been pushed up into a manicured berm. I turned to drop a cornerman on top and this left TB and Crash behind me. I knew they would be jabbering away on the Bluetooth so I let loose. My bike felt like it was locked on rails and I had an awesome run down the trail. It was my highlight of the weekend and the memory of that primo ribbon of loam disappearing off into the distance is stuck in my head today.
At the bottom was one of the deeper crossings we would deal with and then it was back up Middle Ridge. We had ridden this on Friday and everyone had gotten up it so I thought we would hit it with the whole group. This is the section Murph and Mal filmed and as you can see it was a real test. I don’t know if anyone has shots of the sections above this as the trail stays steep and narrows along an off camber slope. Eventually everyone made it to the top and we set off for the next challenge. I knew the Widow Maker would be tough on a day like this but as we arrived at the base I looked up and realised it was going to as difficult as it can get.

We had the chance to ride them on the weekend but they were both stopped on the side of the trail. Fortunately Adam has given some great advice for the owners of these new bikes because there are teething problems. You might want to ask Axel about fuel consumption in 2 strokes Rocket as he gets over 130 km’s out of his. Mal5.1 got 69.2.

I was now confident that even some of the steeper terrain would be ok so I head off with the intention of linking the next four trails without stopping. This would really spread us out and give everyone a chance to hook in. It is hard not to spend the whole day worrying about what is going on behind you when you are responsible for that many people but the riding was so good I fell into my own rhythm and had a ball. As you can imagine I know these trails so well that I know the degree of every corner and the depth of every hole and the traction was supreme on the ridge line we were now riding. At every possible side track or obstacle I dropped a man and kept powering on through as the clouds gathered and the sky once again darkened. There are some long sections of single with no cross roads and each time I would wait for first rider through I could only imagine how good there run would have been. You expect a young frother like Sam to give a holler as he pulls up but at almost every junction some old fella was punching the air and yelling through their mouth piece.
By now I had dropped the same corner men twice since our last re-group which meant the group was moving through itself nicely. At he end of the fourth section, Whinge Rd, I stopped and stripped down as the humidity maxed out at about 130%. Before long we had about 10 of our crew assembled and then at least 10 minutes passed before anyone else showed up and no bikes could be heard.
After a nervous wait hoping no one was hurt it turned out Lefty had broken down.
if you want anyone stuck in the bush with a failed bike and a bum bag it is Lefty. He had asked the sweeps to move through the pack and pick up the cornermen and he would hold his ground and work on his bike. Nickj arrived and explained exactly were he was so I geared up and led the group back to his spot. When I got there he was nowhere to be seen. I looked around and saw his hydration pack on the ground and killed my engine to listen out for him. In moments he had joined us and was back in the game. We were now a fair way from where I had planned us to be and I did want to run a long fire road section so once again I changed our route on the fly and headed off into the next single.

    Great shots Murph!!!
That one of LC is straight to the pool room!
And the one above team work shot (Nate80) shows just how steep that little bugger is. I knew when we turned up ‘Middle Ridge’ what were in for and it did not disappoint. True to OBT you were never going to get left without a bunch of guys to help you and I had full faith everyone would ride through that section.

The beach flip looked scary I was just glad you were ok Murph, I thought Crash was going to run over you from my angle  Hope Dude has some video of that :)

Murph proved once and for all just how freakishly good he is on a bike. To get drive from where he was was amazing. In his last life I reckon he was a Rekluse clutch!
