I have my Spot Tracker set up on the sternum strap of my Camelback. I can reach it with either hand and if I become separated from the bike the spot stays with me. They also recommend in the manual that it should be kept 1 foot from other gps devices.

Plenty of rides to be had between your place and Newcastle so keep your eye out for upcoming rides. If you are happy to drive some distance there are some great rides up and down the coast.
