Yeh Think I’ve found it, thanks again Eagle.

While on George Booth Dve, it looks like you turn off to the right about half a kay or so before Echidna Dve on the left, does that sound about right?

    Hey Squizzy
Corey has summed it up beautifully and when you find another bike you like the look of don’t be shy to post it up and ask the question. There are some passionate 300c 2T riders on this site and it is fair to say they all rip. They would feel they are manageable because of how competent they are on a bike but at the end of the day there are softer options for someone looking to get back into the sport. Besides, if you did end up with the 3 hundy your boy would flog it in time and you would be on the 250 anyway

Thanks King, terrific advice as usual :) . Yeh theres the devil in me in me that really wants that stroker and then there is this gloomy realisation that, the old cart aint what she used to be. So a bigger, more manageable bike is the sensible choice. But there’s this argument I keep having with myself. If I get the stroker, I’ll have to get fitter to get the best out of the bike and myself, so the bike would be kinda pushin me, and so if I go with it, then I’d get fitter and healthier as a natural consequence. While with something slightly more manageable, its likely it will be the other way round somewhat.

If you can ride I reckon a 450 is the best all round bike. It will do everything well. A 300 2 banger is a close second. If you ride road or a decent bit of fire trail the 450 is the better machine, it handles long boring shit better. If you don’t often ride the road or lots of fire trail the 300 is the better bike in terms of fun factor. It is more involving to ride and harder to ride faster depending on your level of skill.

It does wear me out quicker than the 450 too but the engines are very unable so you can have it tuned as mild or as wild as you like.

The 300 is much easier to work on in general, though I think overall maintenance costs over a long period are probably similar for both bikes.

Fuel economy shouldn’t be an issue for any bike if it’s jetted properly, the 2 bangers are more sensitive to jetting for performance and fuel economy so changes make a more noticeable difference.

You need to have a ride of the bike before discounting it. If it comes down to a newer 2 banger or an older 4 banger for the same money and you are a mid level+ rider that doesn’t ride lots of open roads I’d take the 2 banger.

What can I say, great advice here again, this is really giving me some great insights, thankyou :)

Yes I’m lucky, I have a few road bikes and love them all. I mainly ride a Hayabusa 2nd gen, but also a Fireblade occassionally. If one were to transpose these two bikes, we could say the 450-500 would be more busa like, while the stroker more like the blade, is that stretching the bow a bit too far?

Just take your time, there are plenty of bikes to choose from.
Good choice on the KTM 250F. What does the COD lad think of it?

    Cheers Galey

Thanks Galey, will do so. The lad does not know about the bike yet, its gonna be presented as a chrissy present. He’s a very lucky boy indeed, but I’m sure he’ll be over the moon. I know he’s keen coz I have been discussing the prospects of gettin back to dirt riding in recent months and he’s been very enthusistic about such ideas.

Well i am happy to add to this thread and give you my personal experience.

Now please don’t get me wrong the 300 was fun but not my idea of a TRAIL bike and today as of 9.12am i feel like i was first prize in a gay mardi gra raffle. :( :(

    Ouch

Buy a DRZ if you want something low maintance and a perfect allrounder or buy a 450 if you want something with sting and high maintance. or if you want a ass pounding and to be F@#KED at the end of a day buy the 2 smoker. or head to the gym and start working out. i under stand how Mal5.1 and ollie do it. Mal is fit and ollie is in the navy

All this is only my opinion
    Corey8

Hey Corey, thats terrific advice mate, cheers. Yes my fitness levels aren’t what they were  and I know I need to improve such areas, but thats right a 2 smoker may just be a step too far …at this stage anyway :)

    Thanks gang

WOW, thanks for the speedy responses and excellent advice gang.

Yep good advice, I prolly need to ride them, the last 2T’s I rode was my old restored RD250 “Coffin Tank” road bike and before that a Yam RZ250 (Crazy Powerband) a Yam DT250 and RM370. I do remember they were all good fun …in a straight line at least lol!

Thanks for that quality bit of info Rebore, I argee entirely about how its been treated and maintained from new. And many thanks for your experiential insights shared.

In regards valve clearances, are they JUST OHV shim and bucket? Can you replace cam chain without splittin crankcase?

Am guessing like most, its regular oil changes, oil and air filter changes, pads, sprockets, chains, plugs etc etc? Piston, rings, head shim, valves and rebore are not that regular.. are they?

Once again gang, thank so much for the terrific support and comic relief, cheers Squizzy

You really do need to get the bikes set up for legal riding as it opens up so many riding options.
At OBT we have some great father and son combos who get out in the bush together and have a great time.
Three that spring to mind are Mike and Tom from Noosa (WR’s) , Al and Corey from the Coffs Coast (DRZ’s), and Adam and Sam (KTM’s)

Enjoy the site and I may see you both out there one day.

Thanks STM, yes will definitely need to get road legal bikes then, cheers. Look forward to one day catching up with you

Squizz, the DR400’s and WR yamahaha’s are both fully road registerable and great bikes in the bush. Also a worthy mention would be a TTR250. To ride legally in NSW you need full Rd rego. This may change in the future (dont hold your breath) where there is talk of introducing a rec rego similar to VIC. Look at Paying about $400 a year for rego/CTP for a 250-650cc bike. (recently changed where sub 300cc bikes were markedly cheaper)

    welcome to the site mate

Cheers Ollie, yes heard there maybe some changes shortly with CTP

Full rego and a licence is required to ride anywhere other than private property Squizz.

Welcome to the site and don’t worry about asking any “stupid questions” there are plenty of us that do that from time to time but better to ask and learn than to loive in ignorance.

Thanks Jeffro, nice to be among friends, cheers…

Actually just stumbled across this KTM for 3500.00 with 3000 original kms, worth looking at you think, or just stick to the Zooks and Yammies?

Ah, thats terrific advice folks, we thankyou so very much, we’ll get hunting for some WR’s and DRZ’s then, cheers :) B)

Whats the story with rego guys? Do you need a full road rego to ride off-road or is there some other kinda licence you can get that covers just bush riding?

Given that there is some kinda need for headlamps amd blinkers, then I guess yes w’d need to get bikes with the potential at least to be ridden legally on the road. And If I have read right, both the Yammie WR’s and the Suzuki DRZ’s would fit this bill, is that right?

Thanks again gang and my apologies for my local ignorance and sooo many bloody questions

Hey again gang, thanks indeed for such a warm welcome and quality advice. Just need to get the bikes now and then hopefully will be able to tee up a ride with some of you local guys.

Will certainly check out Watagan’s, I take it Mr Plod is pretty vicious round these parts?? 👿 Do you need a full road rego for bikes you ride in the bush here?

Thanks again KatGirl (do you have a Katana as well?) and also Mick and Nick, most helpful:)
