While the idea has merit  Aaron we could take a 250 single trail weapon to big red although it may make getting there it wouldn’t be enjoyable or what it’s for and the adv would maybe, eventually get around the trail it isn’t what either is about is it

I am sure it’s just banter (I know that is how I play the game) I have been lucky enough to do both nearly all of the on and off road aspects of our sport at the best it as to offer.
I have done track days with road bikes, raced state enduros, a4de, condo 750s, played motard, done short track and long track, trail ridden most all places in NSW I can think of and most I forget, I have ridden some of the best adv riding our country has to offer and loved every moment of it.
The adrenaline rush of putting a 250 kilo loaded bike through knee deep sand rut at 60kph or trying to get said bike up big red or trying to get it turned into a corner when going to fast is exactly the same as when I am having a real go in good singles. At times the rush is even higher because I think the consequences can be higher given the big heavy thing will smash you hard if you get it wrong. The mental pressure of doing this sort of riding if you are having a go for 12 hrs is different again.
The sense of satisfaction at the end each day is the same, although there are differences at what has been achieved. For me having ridden singles for years (25+) I wanted to see some of the country and found there were hardly any new areas to ride single style and old ones are either over riden getting logged out closed or torn to pieces by four wheel drives not to mention the constant threat of a head on. New was the key for me, sure you find a new 4 km trail but after a few runs its the same (Murphs would always be a challenge) and no matter how prime your local area is its still all the same in the end for me I am saying. The entire great dividing range along the east coast is pretty well the same if you have ridden it from south of Sydney to the border IMO
I spoke with Craig Hartley last year at the TK ride he is a bloke who has done it ALL on bikes and he said to me it doesn’t matter what he rides as long as he is riding he said he loved cutting around on his 1000cc road bike as much as his 530kTM as much as his 990 adv bike.
As far as the debate adv V singles, well until you have done both properly you will never really know what you are missing either way. I love doing both but for the time being my focus is on adv riding although for the poker run at seaveiw I am bringing the mother of all single trail style weapons to roost all the 250cc four stroke girls and scare myself!!
Also in the last month I have started thinking about I uncompleted challenges including getting a medal at a A4DE, ummmNo offense is meant in the above to anyone or their favorite riding style or areas

If you ever want to try Kendas or Maxxis, give me a shout. I know a tyre guy.
Mal I used Maxxis before and during the four day in 06 and reckoned they were alright eh. Don’t see them around much down here but thought they would be good for Lochie’s new bike as he liked them on his 85. Can they be sourced where I got my car tyres?
TB
I googled the 06 Four day results and look at this gem i found.

STM

Makes it look like a pure MX bike with temporary lights to me !
Shame for trying to pull the wool over our eyes Yamaha !
Pull your head out of your KTM arse Al like a KTM Dakar bike is a EXC   or the factory CRF go to the Yamaha FB page they explain the bike there all up front full disclosure there mate
BTW when do the bikes at Dakar really represent what we ride or the A4DE for that matter ( they should ADR compliant bikes IMO dont start me on that)
TB
Single trailing S12 rear easily the best tyre around IMO. Front another Michelin M12 as good IMO as the S12 front just wears better.
Second rear Dunlop geomax and front Michelin M12 again it’s too good to not be second choice again
IMO
I changed my riding style a little over the last couple of single trail rides and got great wear out of the S12s
if you don’t just hang the tail out for the hell of it they wear well and like Scotty said stay of the tar and treat it with resect they will keep an edge. Spin them up and you can have a smoking carcass in 220kms  especially on an XR 650. if you ride something that produces NO horsepower or torque like a KTM they would be my sole choice

I just watched that again as I sit here in Brisbane waiting for my kero kite. That action at the 1.40 mark leaves me speechless  it’s just amazing
TB
Check the slow mo at the 1.40 mark, if that had been 99% of punters they would eating shit. If thats not the case I will give it up!!
Watch it and watch it in 1080 or 720 on a good screen, watch the foot peg weighting and body shifting amazing control.http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=5g5lnsl6dHg
