Well you have found the problem Snowy so that’s good. From experience and I hope I am wrong with yours but once shimmed I doubt you will get 15hrs out of the valves before they close again. I have seen it a few times, Nickj’s for example, STM’s there has been a few. Valves will need replacing then, good news is set of kibble white valves and a seat service and it will last a long time. DONT LAP THE NEW VALVES IN. I did NickJ’s must be 80 hrs ago (Nick?) no more shimming. Nick at Tekniks did his head, did big Al’s head good job and cheap. You don’t need all the springs and crap they say we have proved that. We have proved you don’t need special seats and 1000 dollar head services. You can send the head to Tekniks or ring Nick I am sure he will help with some advice.
Nick @ Tekniks has a lot of CRF experience including some testing I think around the bikes and pre their release in Aus they saw air filter testing etc back then. Standard air filters and good filter oil, only Bel Ray or Motul is the go, filters need washing a few times, then hot soapy water and dried out and then blown out with low pressure air when dry. An old clothes dryer is the trick actually. They help blow and bounce the remaining dust out when dry. Try tapping one you think you have cleaned out when it’s dry on a piece of glass. The CRF won’t tolerate that dust like most bikes will it seems. This thread will help and remember Nick was doing the heads cheap if you pull it of there and send it. If you had it done there he would also help with parts etc I am sure
Good luck

snowy09 wrote:Valve clearances are fine so don’t go there. But my crf250x is experiencing sporadic starting issues It didn’t want to start first thing and then occasionally thru the day while the rest of the time first push of the button. It’s running great otherwise. I m going to put my old spark plug back in as the it’s the only change recently that matches when it started to play up.
Any other ideas? Cheers snowy
Have you actually checked the valves? Or had them checked? Don’t assume they are right a Snowy. On the spark plug thing, I had a CR 250 years again that would only run with one spark plug, not one brand, all the same number but it would only run with the same plug  try the plug if it’s the last thing you did before the problem for sure.
Try starting it cold in the morning Snowy and get back to us

With the wheel on the ground and the bike out of gear grab the sprocket and try to rotate it backwards and forwards (Direction of rotation and backwards) see how much movement you have. You have the double row bearing mod done to that cush hub (I fitted it after Nick machined it) The rubbers you had then I looked at and they will be fine I can assure you. At the High Country ride I will double check and show you. (I will have a care package for you also so don’t do anything at this stage

After a large night last night I thought I would spend the day on the lounge but eventually got outside and got stuck into the WR.
Part 1 is done
Pro Motion Billet rear rack
New bars, bar risers, grips, barkbusters, Tapp lites ports and IMS tank
Pivot Pegz
Stage 2. I need to modify the rack to lift it 10mm to take the chain saw mount, fit the Adventure Moto / Barrett racks for the Wolfman luggage and have Nick @ Teknik’s sort the suspension
