    Folks,

XT660Z Tenere’s overall consumption over 20,000 is 23.25 km/l – bloody fantastic in my book :cheer:

in reply to: Brace yourself #218354

Folks, I think a brace will help minimise injuries. When I hit the roo four weeks ago I landed on a bend right knee and that busted some bone structure and tore my PCL (grade 3). The sideways bending then did the rest to tear a further bunch of tendens. I was not wearing any brace but did have the normal soft knee guards in my adventure riding pants (did not think that I may need the brace as it was meant to be a gentle sealed/ unsealed road breakfast run only). I have comprehensive health insurance and I am already $4,500 out of pocket. I think the cost of a decent brace will pay for itself very quickly!

As an aside, my Leatt brace made a huge difference in stopping my neck over extending, as did my Sidi Adventure boots that took a heck of a hammering and left me with only a sprain.

The moral of the story is to wear all the gear all the time!

in reply to: 2012 Tenere Tragics ride #210506

    Hi TB,

I was riding with another mate of mine. It was supposed to be a gentle “get used to the new tyres ride”. For the 75km travelled on the new tyres they seemed OK on tar. The ride on the short gravel section must have been 5km tops when the roo jumped into my front end. I did not see him at all, it was just one big jump out of the scrub and down I went. One dead roo and one busted knee :(

The bike will need a new SW Motech crash bar and rear brake lever (does anybody make one that folds?) Other than that the Ten did not have a scratch.

It was just one of those rare events. It is a good thing I had all the gear on as it could have been worse.

    Ride safe guys.

    Cheers, TT

Well folks, on Satuday I fitted a Dunlop 606 front and Mitas E-09 Dakar rear tyre in preparation for this year’s Tenere Tragics ride. Got all geared up on Sunday morning and about 45 mins into the ride between Wisemans Ferry and St Albans a kangaroo jumped out of the bushes into the bike. I was doing about 50 km/h on a hard packed gravel road and went down like a sack of spuds. Needless to say as I am typing this up from my hospital bed with a busted right knee, I am not going anywhere for the next 8 weeks or so.

To the rest of the Tenere Tragics group, enjoy the trip and ride safe.

Boulder, I guess the trick is to roll on the throttle as opposed to treating it like a binary switch with either idle or full throttle as the only two options!

Then again, I suspect that many Old Bulls ride that way! B)

After 10,000km this is what the Heidenau K60 Scouts look like on my Tenere. I believe they are still good for at least another 2 – 3,000km. All up, not a bad choice if you spend most of your travels on road or hard packed surfaces. Oh, and they still grip like there is no tomorrow in corners on tar surfaces :)

They must be a good thing! I will order one for the rear tomorrow and a Michelin Desert for the front.

    Many thanks mate.

Thanks guys, so would you recon a Dakar for the rear (running proper pressures) and a TKC on the front would be close to ideal for the Tenere?

    Cheers, TT

Michelin Desert front is what Nick and I now use, DeeJay has used it also. My only problem with the Desert is the slightly lower profile, if you are having a go you can dent your rims it seems. I only have two dents, one was with a AC10 Michelin and the other a Desert pretty much the same tread and profile the desert has a stiffer side wall. To be fair more pressure could have been used both times but thats how it happened. I also like the aggressive Dunlop 607 it will make the same miles as the Dakar I think. (I know Mickp gets the miles out of it) I wouldnt use a TKC if they gave them to me for free sorry

E09 rear yeah, if it was to be muddy I couldnt vouch for a E09 and would probably use a 606

    Confused

E09 rear (guaranteed wet ride 606) and Desert or 607 front for me ;)

Somehow I don’t think that anybody who pulls an Esky with a wheel cares too much about the handling! I suppose that if one drags one of these stuffed with beer it really becomes more about the party at the destination than the journey

in reply to: Cush Drive inner tube modification XT660Z Tenere #208895

    Folks,

this is a mod that I did to my broken set of cush drive rubbers about 4000km ago. It worked just fine for the 4000km and when I pulled the tyre this morning to fix a flat, I still could not see any free movement between the sprocket housing and rim even though the mod itself was pretty much worn out.

This is what my cush drive rubbers looked like after I cleaned them up this morning. Most will agree that they are pretty much screwed. That said, for a couple of dollars you can still make them work OK.

    http://i1086.photobucket.com/albums/j452/TenereTravelers/Tenere%20XTZ660%20cush%20drive%20modification/DSC01504.jpg

Cut some bicycle inner tube into lenghts so that you slip the cush drive rubbers into the inner tube sleeves.

    http://i1086.photobucket.com/albums/j452/TenereTravelers/Tenere%20XTZ660%20cush%20drive%20modification/DSC01511.jpg

The modified cush drive rubbers fitted. There is no free play and the sprocket housing pushes straight in and into its original position. This mod costs almost nothing and lasts at least 4000km.

    http://i1086.photobucket.com/albums/j452/TenereTravelers/Tenere%20XTZ660%20cush%20drive%20modification/DSC01512.jpg

    Hope this helps!

    Cheers, TT
