Does WD40 soak into the pads and do bad things forever??
Oh yeah, 2 possible issues with your model Ollie;
1 get a manual cam chain tensioner if it doesn’t have one already
2 find out from the previous owner/s if the primary drive nut has been locktightened to the tension recomended for the 06/07/08 models (98Nm I think).
If that nut comes loose it’s “goodnight motor”.Apart from overheating they are the two things to be concerned about.
Newer models (04 and on) had bigger radiator inlet & outlets but a good coolant and pure water will put the boiling point up high enough for NZ riding.Good stuff Ollie. Great general trail bike the DRZ is.
A friend of mine bumped into the guy who bought his 2000 model DRZ just the other day, that bike has now done over 30,000K’s (mostly road but some dirt as well) and it still hasn’t needed a valve adjustment!
My 06 model did 13,500 fairly hard dirt K’s (with some road) and was still in original new spec. when it got sold.
I’m convinced the only DRZ’s that fail are the ones that dont get looked after properly and/or get totally flogged.
Wikd.
Hey this is interesting, Motos’ link was sales figures for “off road” bikes. Look at the figures for “enduro” bikes http://www.mcnews.com.au/NewsArchives/2008/Sales_3rd_Quarter/top_enduro.htm%5Bhide%5D%5B/hide%5D
This says they sold more DRZ’s than KTM’s
A LOT more!
Yeah, I used to do Trials comp about 15 years ago.
I doubt any rego’able bike will be a true trials comp bike, there’s just no way they’d pass one of the modern comp bikes.
They are very very light and very slow, 60Km/h is all you will ever get out of one, max! Very close ratio 6 speed box. They only carry about 3L of fuel so they wont go far either.They are purpose built and would be fun if you have somewhere to ride it or plan on doing comp. but their small brakes would overheat easily on trails.
Horses for courses really.
Look here; http://trials.com.au/
Heh, heh, thanks guys. I like it too but I dont know how long my licence would last if I ride it much in Motard, the speedo doesn’t work with these wheels on!

Quote:Looks trick Wikd!!! How’d you get on with the Radiator and shroud damage??I got the radiator repaired, lost 2 tubes but that’s OK. BMW said they will still warrant the bike with a repaired radiator.
The broken shroud caused BMW to do a recall on some bikes which have ‘brittle’ plastics and ALL the plastics are to be replaced at the expense of Acerbis who made them, they are meant to be unbreakable and BMW are adhering to that
I hope I can keep the old plastics.I had a great ride, all 15 minutes of it!
The radiator was holed by a pointy log and the damage was probably repairable but I decided not to risk the 2 year warranty by doing a temp fix and called it a day.
Besides I had plenty to do at home anyway, sorry about that but next ride I will see it through (hopefully).Wikd.

Oh I have done teaching for TAFE but I dont fit that stereotypical kind of personality very well so I chucked it inchampo35 wrote:

i think i kind-a agree with mick.
if bmw made a trapping valve 2-stroke bike, excluded all the accessories, bling, electronic control, battery, history, condescending attitude, and striped it down to a dirt bike and put a kick starter on it. kept all the clever stuff that others should be doing such as coaxial counter shaft and swing arm pivot, etc. i would buy one and even resist the urge to put honda stickers over the bmw stickers.
if you look at the past bikes i have owned (rego cr, rego yz, xr, tm) i think this is what i like in a dirt bike.Note to self; keep fingers away from keyboard! :dry:
You can look at my Beemer for the answer;
Hand guards, bash plate and radiator protection (not many bikes come with all 3)
Then add 3M clear protection to all the damage areas of the plastics/metal to stop the scuffs & scratches.
Head light protector?Oh and what about all those important anodised things like valve caps and fuel tank cap etc? You might need them too.
I will only be riding Sat.
I can be ready any time but suggest a ready to ride time of 8:30 (arrive at.
This a lot cheaper than the one I was gonna buy, hope I win one.
