here be the beast. pic from evilbay. a photo taken from the screen so not the best.

and it was about 1/3-1/2 the price of others of the same vintage going by visual cues.

but looking at the seat etc. it’s about the right price. and was within my budget.

all have to do now is organise to pick it up.

Jodie had already done the online L test a couple of times. :woohoo:

Ps I read all the above twice Drew and firstly congrats, second cant you still also go riding when you move over here ways  You will have a gun place to host a ride

    TB

yes TB i will be riding in the area once i move, the bride is into bikes and so is the 15yo boy. will be saving as much as/if posable to look for a sub 250, 175- 230 something for her to ride with me and her boy can borrow it from time to time. as i alluded to in the KTM 200 Duke thread. ;)

but it won’t be with any of the Vic crew for some time after i move as it will be more logistically challenging due to distance etc. for them to attend unless planed well in advance, which i cant do til i’m settled n found my feet in the new surroundings.

once i find my feet over there i will endeavor to host a ride…..

and once i have moved it will be some time before i could attend any of the Vic rides.

hence this thread. to organise an opportunity to see the Vic crew go for a roost one last time as a single man and thank em all for the best Vic riding i’ve ever done.

all make sense now?? :P :silly:

that’d be hard to take Aido…. newish toy and lots of close by riding to you and given an order to stay off the trails….. knowing how keen you are to ride and all.

october could be a contender anyway Aido.

i did think even if a ride cannot be organised, maybe a bbq somewhere for some bench racing could be a goer too.

They’ve gone away from the postie engine ???

and the return of the 350 4T… 1991 was their second ever model….. for as ong as i cold remember it was 450, 550, 650 before the 70ΒΊ engines. all 100mm bore with a different stroke.

    anyway enough of the past.

    350 only 1kg heavier than the 250. 501 only .5kg heavier than the 450. both same 95mm bore….

2T: 250 and 300 share the same stroke… each 2T is either under square or a square engine… being 125 and 250 has a longer stoke than bore and the 300 is 72mm bore/72mm stroke.

shame on you STM.. bringing us a link only. …… making us do all our own work on a Saturday and all!

should have taken pics and vid with ya mobile. Ian

and taken it to the rangers or local law. but at best they could only fine them. maybe?? or just a stern word/ slap on the wrist would have been all they would/could hand out. ??

in a survey i did just the other day for an insurance mob re: bike owners/riders, i said in a ‘what was important to me’ section, was i detested the bad name given to the majority by a minority of morons.

my better half loves the Aprilia RS 125. but we are not under the one roof yet and our funds are being chewed up in travel to and from, and saving to get my Transit on the road and saving for the wedding. we are not able to afford luxuries ATM.

plus i think she will forgo a bike for herself first so the son can have a dirt bike to ride with me. his father will no doubt revoke his entitlement to the young fella’s own wr250 once i’m on the scene and wanting to ride with the the young bloke.

plus if we get a dirt bike the missus can borrow it to commute to work or her and i can do some fire trails around ‘pork chop’ hill. or he can ride with us and i go two the lovely lady along some of the fire trails.

Interesting, your not the only one who likes the 640’s ! – much higher resale than other similar bikes and many with really big kms
    haven’t found any 660’s yet

Being a KTM guy – what do you think about the 300 2 stroke ??

ummm i’ve been there done that. riding on the road at 100km/h cost a seized rebuild after a mere 19 hrs.

yet Menace has enjoyed an estimated 200+hrs by now, trouble free single riding. and he is no slouch in the saddle! albeit his is an electric leg model and mine was an 03.

however if i had the money now i would buy another 2T in a heartbeat for single trail riding. i now know what tuning is needed.

fuel range/ consumption of a 2T would be another factor into long distance riding. but biggest factor is as Minusone mentioned is service intervals.

i too agree with the thought that you will not find a single bike to fulfill both roles happily. i’d go a big bore for ADV. and something light for trail. but that means 2 regos.

did you consider the Hyper motard when buying Ducati? just out of interest.

yeah the NX is the dominator.

and a 660 Adventure Kato was the reference i was making. they are pricy as they are few and far between out here and hold a high resale value. from memory when TB looked into the 690 the accessories were more expensive than for a late model Yamy 660.

biggest diff. between 640 and 625SXC is the 640 is more dual or road oriented. i was informed (Menace ;) ) that the 640 has a balancer shaft in the engine to tame the vibrations. the SXC has the exact same basic engine except for the balancer shaft, hence the stories of the vibrations.

the SXC is a slightly trimmed down 640, a marginally smaller tank and i think from memory a more MX styled seat, a bit thinner in width and a bit firmer.

i reckon what ever you go with there will be moments of compromise in areas.

you would have to narrow it down to a few bikes, price up the gear needed. long range tank. a seat redone and maybe a second one for when you go more single trail? getting the suspension done for your combined weight= you, riding gear and fuel tank capacity. + any camping gear you will haul on the long trips.

this where you may find a compromise as if you set it up for the weight a full 21L tank and only have the Std. 8-12L tank on it for a weekend the suspension may be a little too firm. but if you set it up for the small tank it will dive and or plough straight when braking hard with the loaded 21L tank.

most suspension places are within $300.00 of each other.

jetting/tuning the bike. and 2 sets of sprockets and chains so you can swap from single trail gearing for the weekends you are just out for a full day or weekend. and then a more comfortable at a higher speed for long travel days.

most of the bikes mentioned would all be capable bikes.

i would lean toward the 640 over a 525/530 as they are 5000km oil changes in normal going. 10000km service.

i don’t know about the other brands. if their big bore bikes are same intervals as the 550 and under or are longer periods between services.

if going Kato, go the later model with the electric speedo. the cable on the 2002 and earlier bikes are a pain (dunno what year they swapped i think the 03 were electronic), i’ve had 4-5 pull out, and in going to a Trail tek unit i had to replace the disc to accommodate the magnet for the speedo sensor. my bike had the 300mm disc and they didn’t put 300mm discs on the later bikes they were 260 or 320. i ended up getting a 320mm disc and adaptor bracket from China. they were the only ones offering an adaptor for the bikes with the 300mm disc. all the others suited the 260mm bikes.

wow that interesting Scotty. bet NX and L owners would be happy to know that. means parts would still be available. but freight from the US would be costly on larger items.

talk to a local Honda dealer and ask about NX/ L parts availability.

maybe a well looked after NX would be a viable and suitable option then.
