no worries Syco, happy to share my knowledge where i can,

now i’ve shared all the knowledge i have

i believe with oil weight you need to be more courteous only when you step up the ‘w’ by 10 or more. so with going up by 5 should not pose any drama,

the only time you would need to take care is if you are in a colder than normal, say 10ºc.
and all you would have to do is pay a little more than normal attention to warming her up before riding as per your usual climate/conditions. and loading the engine- revs, heat and the like.

so not starting her up and tarring off like a lunatic cold.

A cop stops a Harley for traveling faster than the posted speed li mi t,

so he asks the biker his name.

    ‘Fred,’ he replies.

    ‘Fred what?’ the officer asks.

    ‘Just Fred,’ the
    man responds.

The officer is in a good mood and thinks he mi ght just give the biker a break and, write him out a warning instead of a ticket. The officer then presses him for the last name.

The man tells him that he used to have a last name but lost it. The officer thinks that he has a nut case on his hands but plays along with it. ‘Tell me, Fred, how did you lose your last name?’

    The biker
replies, ‘It’s a long story, so stay with me.’ I was born Fred Johnson.

I studied hard and got good grades.

When I got older, I realized that I wanted to be a doctor. I went through college, medical school, internship, residency, and finally got my degree, so I was Fred Johnson, MD. After a while I got bored being a doctor, so I decided to go back to school.

Dentistry was my dream! Got all the way through School, got my degree, so then I was Fred Johnson, MD, DDS.

Got bored doing dentistry, so I started fooling around with my assistant and she gave me VD, so now I was Fred Johnson, MD, DDS, with VD.

Well, the ADA found out about the VD, so they took away my DDS.

Then I was Fred Johnson, MD, with VD. Then the AMA found out about the ADA taking away my DDS because of the VD, so they took away my MD leaving me as Fred Johnson with VD.

Then the VD took away my Johnson, so now I am Just Fred.’

The officer walked away in tears, laughing

Thanks for the advise MOTO … I gotta go with the 250 because I am going to be on L plates and I want to fully register the bike. ( Im pretty sure that the 300 is not listed as a learners beast )

I just looked at the latest list and the ’08 300 exce is listed as a LAMs bike, crikey even the evil 380 is listed

    BC

yup even the 640 is LAMS approved.

the list of road bikes up to around the 750cc ( ??? ) mark that are not on the LAMS list is shorter than the approved bikes. from memory.

some are the RGV, NSR and Aprilia 2T 250’s. up until the power to weight ratio rule come in these bikes were L plate leagel

yes the ‘W’ is the winter or cold temp viscosity of the oil.

the viscosity changes with temp, if it is too thick on start up, it will not do it’s job properly until it reaches operating temp. which leads to either premature ware.

however if your oil is a little thicker? not quite right wording, but say you have 20w-50 and it’s 5ºc out side dose not mean you cannot start it, it just pays to worm it up more than normal before riding it.

the same goes for cars, if you have a higher ‘W’ weight than the temp out side it means you need to warm up more than normal, before feeding it loads of throttle/revs and or load.

hopefully TB or the like can clear up anything in my explanation that may not be 100% explained right, or ill informed.

no, unless it says ‘Non friction modified’ on the bottle.

someone can correct me if i’m wrong ( what’s new!)

but never use a car oil unless it has on the bottle non friction modified.

the friction modified stuff is not suited for oil bathed clutched as in bikes, it will cause them to slip and dose the plates in real quick.

Edit, i cannot find that particular oil on their site, i also googled it and could not come up with any specs on it either.

i would err on the safe side and use a bike specific oil, or one that has a list/chart of what car oil you can use like penrite have.
