Sounds like someone’s going to have to cut NickJ’s grass for him….
How the build coming along Nick, any progress?

Failing that I’ll EBay up a storm for a pan.
Was looking at them for their Forma Adventure boots but I’m a bit reluctant to buy boots without trying them on first.
You mentioned you have a couple of their seats on different bikes, have you used the same seat covering texture and which one is it?The forma boots are pretty good by all accounts. You can arrange to try them on at Adventure Moto if you can get there, give them a ring and organise it. Ace tried his on there recently as he has been busy kitting himself and the BMW out for his big adventure this weekend in Sydney at the Mardi Gras
Have used the swede one on Wolfmans WR rally was ok, like the carbon myself

I would love to go and visit them, be like a kid in a candy store except its 3990 klms from me.
Just googled it….lol
I’m in Darwin mate, Humpty Doo to be exact.
Guess I’ll go with the carbon option for the seat going by what you’ve said. Thanks for your help TB, much appreciated

TB, have had a look at the “Seat Concepts” however, they will need to use my seat pan correct?
Or can they supply a seat pan assy and fit their foam and cover to that?
What density foam are you using for your XR?
Was hoping to try and keep my original seat complete for resale purposes.
With regards to sizes, what range does OEM provide with their oversize pistons?
Sorry for all the questions too Nick but I do tend to drain knowledge from people in the know..
I’m a motor mechanic by trade (no longer in the industry as it doesn’t pay enough) and would prefer to do my own work however when it comes time for a freshen up of mine (650R) I think i’ll send it your way. Will be worth the postage for it to be done right.
Plus I hate opening manual gearboxes…..especially motorbike gearboxes as I’ve had nil to no experience with them.
Do you bore the cylinder or are they pressed in/out and replaced?
TB, where’s the best place to buy these from?
Certainly look good and want to for the priceThanks again Nick.
How’s that engine coming along now?
Be very interested to see this go back together, the steps and processes. Thanks for the info Nick, very informative.
Would you recommend the use of the stock cam (lift/ height) over a modded stock cam in an adventure bike?
Obviously we’re not looking for extreme power etc, more so fuel economy/ rideability. Is there a particular grind you use for ADV style riding or one size fits all?
Appreciate the reply’s due to your expertise.Teknik wrote:650R is the same. I had JE make us 11:1 pistons with OEM rings pin and clips. That’s what we used in 00-05. I ran out of them and never re-ordered because the HRC piston had become more common and not horrendously expensive and so many people with no idea (my opinion) told me the Wiseco rings were fine.
In the odd 650R engine I do now the customer has usually bought a pile of expensive billet junk from the US of A and wants me to assemble the mess. I smile, take their money and do the work. They don’t ask my what I think, some expert has already told them.Teknik, you recommend using the stock piston for an Adventure bike?
You mentioned “stock type”, just trying to clarify if its an OEM piston you’d prefer or an aftermarket billet version machined to stock specs?
Do you apply the same train of thought to the 650R as well?
Teknik wrote:Ill have it quoted up for next week. Will look for a stock cam in my spares too, you don’t want any if the 3 monsters I just had ground.
Will go with a stock type piston too, the Wiseco’s are no good for adventure bikes, ring life is crap.
Might see you at PI.Trailboss wrote:Wow good read Chicken, nice work. I run Motul 5100 have done for years and years. I have over 140k on 4 bikes on it and not a single problem. I see it rated well in your read. We have just torn my Tenere engine down with 50k and 850 plus hrs on it and as the thread showed it in great condition, I will continue to use it.Thanks again for the info
TB
I have used the Motul 5100 in my bikes throughout the years too and never had an oil related issue with mine either. The cylinder on the Tenere looked good with the cross hatch still visible and after 50K that’s a testimate to the oil’s effectiveness I guess. I have over 300hrs on my 700 Grizzly (mostly mud work) and no issues so far. However I would prefer something cheaper than the Motul but to be changed more often, hence my original question regarding the Rotella.
Either way it will cost me same probably but I would have cleaner internals due to the more frequent oil changes.
That’s the thought process behind the question anyway….
Is it not available in Aus?
Sure i’ve seen it somewhere, years ago
Still got them up here, only for sale and use on one day per year (July 1st, Territory Day).
You can imagine how many get let off before after that day though, these are the idiots that will get them banned.
It will happen, only a matter of time………..
Will do mate, been flat out myself.
Give you a bell about smoko time -
