Will know how good it is once I hit the bush, maybe next week some time. Feels good so far.
July 2, 2011 at 12:24 am #204010I went out today for a ride, a couple of hours of dirt, and that engin run on is a constant piss off, and some times downrite dangerouse. Looking forward to a report there Scotty.
Cheers Teza.July 3, 2011 at 10:04 pm #204011Got some long overdue maintenance done on the RMX today. Pull down the rear suspension, cleaned and greased all the swing arm and linkage bearings. Looks like it has been a long time since the rear wheel was been off. The axle took some massaging to get out, would of been interesting if it was out on the trail changing a flat.
Replaced the ugly ADR headlight with a proper RMX unit. Added some high bend bars, new grips and removed the Barkbusters putting the original hand guards on. Pulled the blinkers off for now as it wont be getting registered just yet.
Plan on taking my young bloke out to Pacific Park on Wednesday to give the RMX and DRZ a run.
July 6, 2011 at 12:39 am #204012Ok I got to give the RMX a bit of a workout today. I loaded it up and headed to Pacific Park. I was keen to see how it would peform with the new carby. I have fitted a set of Jimmy Button high bend bars with makes the riding position much better but I have not yet replaced the tyres, they are horrible and well worn.
The rear tyre would struggle for grip on a PeeWee
To cut a long story short the RMX rips. I forgot how much fun 2 strokes are. I was surprised by how much torque it has down low. For those that don’t know Pacific Park it is an area of a large valley that splits in two. The bottom of the valley has a hard pack flat track and as you get further up the valley there are a couple of sand based flat tracks. The Park is used by the local trials club so either side of the valley there are numerous mountain goat style hill climbs and some nice single track up the back of the valleys.
I did some blasting on the sand tracks, was very interesting with the tyres fitted but hell fun. I then began to find some hill to play on. It took my awhile to realise how much torque this thing has and it would pull up most anything I dared to take it up in 2nd. I rode some rock and root strewn hills I wouldn’t choose to take the DRZ up.
I made up a loop which took in both valleys and some technical hills, single and creek ride then just did laps. At the end there was some hills I was doing in 2nd early on I was now doing in 3rd with ease. The carb was perfect. Left the jetting that was fitted by Mainjet. I did play with the air screw. It was supposed to be set at 1 and a half turned out but was more lick 2 and a half. Set back to 1 and a half and it was perfect. No sign of the dreaded run on that RMX owners complain of.
The rear suspension felt good but the front is a bit harsh, I’m recovering from a work related shoulder injury and I will be feeling it tonight, (nothing a little Jim Beam can’t fix)
Al up I’m stocked. The bike rips when you give it a fist full but will torque up hills with ease. Going to throw some new tyres on it and organise a ride up Clarence in a couple weeks.
PS, anybody want to buy a DRZ400E?
July 6, 2011 at 2:00 pm #204431Nice find Scotty, I have ridden one of those beasts and the power delivery was kinda scary either on or off, looks like a great project bike, I would get the frame powder coated, (theres a few round penrith I have found that will do it). I have a yz80s in my shed that I am getting motivated to put back together.
Cheers
Chris.July 6, 2011 at 8:43 pm #204013Yeh! good one Scotty, the new carb sounds good, recon I’l order one tomorrow:cheer: Glad that you like the bike,I’v never had a problem with the power delivery and always thought that the tourqe was ok, n that it went well for a 250,but, my last bike was a YZ400 witch had loads of tourqe, n keeping it in the rev range,,,big blast,,but that was a wile ago now. Smokers can do both no worries, always could.
Cheers teza.July 6, 2011 at 8:58 pm #204014Hey Scotty do you know where I could source a 2nd hand carby? i have seen them new and they are too expensive. I have had a look online and have found a few new but they are around the $300 mark and im up for a set of new rotors as well so im trying to do it cheaper if possible
July 6, 2011 at 9:09 pm #204015Hey,Demasi,,I seen some on E BAY for $160,US I think, but I dont know what kind of jeting thay’d have.

July 6, 2011 at 9:33 pm #204498Thanks Ollie ill get bidding hopefully I should get one for a good price, then its time to change the jetting, but I have worked it out pretty well. I had a look at the FMF page they say 175 main, 55pilot stock needle on the 3rd clip, sound like a good place to start?
July 6, 2011 at 9:38 pm #204499Nuh ! I will dig up the jetting that sounds to rich everywhere!

July 6, 2011 at 10:15 pm #204016Demasi, Ebay is the go for second hand units. $360 seems expensive for a new one but they come with a JD jet kit which is $150 on its own so not bad value.
Mine is 175 main, 45 pilot, JD blue needle on third clip. Kit come with extra 170 and 180 mains and JD red needle which is leaner. Your may be different with the FMF pipe. I was looking at a FMF or Pro Circuit pipe but I’m happy with the performance of the standard pipe and at this stage the money would be better spend on suspension work.
Teza I recon the carby upgrade will solve you run on problem and give better throttle response. I couldn’t fault mine it just worked everywhere, whether I was climbing technical rocks and roots or holding it wide open on the sand flat track.

July 6, 2011 at 10:44 pm #204017Ollie, I’ve had a look at some US sites but because to OZ model is different I was confused at what model would fit. The 97-00 RM looks similar but from what I know have a different motor. Can you confirm what model I should be looking for if ordering OS.
