If someone were to say want to move onto a different bike say… one with a button what would the gang here recommend..

Currently own – 1996 XR400 and am very happy with what she puts out ie; power, control and performance.

    Wants:

The low maintenance of the XR400.
A Button start because my right leg hurts from all the kicking this past weekend.

    Don’t want:
The massive high maintenance schedule of these new bikes.

    Cheers…

+1 on what TB said, DRZ400 would be the go. They handled everything thrown at them on the weekend. In the right hands they go great from what I have seen(I haven’t ridden one myself)

Has to be the DRZ. I find it a great bike for what i use it for.

Also the DR was the biggest selling trail bike last year.

If you do decide to go with a DRZ400 it would pay to give Mud n Tar motorcycles at Wauchope a ring. They are one of our site sponsors and will give you a price that would be hard for other dealers to beat. Let me know if you are keen and I will help you nut out a deal with Rod. Actually I will go up there in a minute and see what price he can do one for you.

Chris I built a DR for Choppa 18 months ago See Here

If you read through it you will see the components fitted and tested and the reviews they received. The large front disc was the best add on at the time the carbon fibre bars the worst. The barrett pipe and Roc Stompa damper worked well

    Thanks fellas..

I thought that was the case but looking at some photos of them they look to have the modern looking engines that want the high valve maintenance..

Any feedback from current or past owners.. What are the typical mods and addon’s one would want to do..

First thing to do is the suspension.

As above your last post Chris

Chops did a intake valve but we found it had been dusted previous him purchasing it from the police force through e bay

I would say they are bullet proof if maintained, I know of one that has been ridden through the middle of Australia and then right around and never been touched bar servicing.

    Mods

    Manual cam chain adjuster

    Suspension (Tekniks)

Higher stronger bars and bark busters

    Quality tyres

    Case covers

All of the above I would be happy to help you obtain a deal on if required

Gas Gas 450 FSE, highly underrated bike, not as hard-core as the other 450s, and lower maintenance like the DRZ or XR.

    Fuel injected
    Proven reliability
Good suspension, some models with Ohlins
    Motor is reknown for longevity
Cheap as chip for a good low kilometre second-hand one (if you can find one)

If i were in the market for a softer trailbike in a 4T, the Gas Gas would certainly be in top position

Ask around Wauchope I thinks Deans did 3500kms before it was rebuilt and still isnt right I think I heard.

    Stay main stream IMO

Yep there were a few friday arvo ones, but well outnumbered by the quietly ticking along ones running perfectly, buy something ’06 and newer all bugs worked out by then just like the bad batch of XRs a few years back. But a good secondhand one will have had any bugs ironed out, up here they are relatively easy to find the local dealer (before he burnt down) was very active and sold quite a few.

But sure if you like spending heaps of money just to bring a DRZ up to half the Gas gas’s standard, hey why not.

Wait on why didn’t anyone suggest a KTM300?
    Low maintenance
    Button Start
    Easy power
    Good resale
    user friendly

    Moto you’re slipping…..

Just got back from Mud n Tar. Normal on road cost for a brand new one is $10,300

Special Old Bull price $9,200 ride away inc $500 cash back(rego price based on your postcode c-e-l is $150 dearer than here at Wauchope). They said they have a good 2nd hand one available to for about $4500 from memory.

In defence of the Gasser 450 FSE that Itsagas owns, I think it may have been a recovered stolen bike in its past life.
