Last race for the NIPES (Northern inland pony express) is at the Upper Horton on Saturday the 17th October 2009.
This is the ‘Big One”. This one is unique due to the fact it is held on a Saturday, and it’s also the day of Presentations to all the class winners. I would like to see all the Old Bulls there to hear my many acceptance speeches and I need someone to help me to organize a Pan- teck to get all my trophies back to Tamworth.
It’s a great day and a great track, rivers, gullies, hills and a goat mountain. The usual sign on time is between 7 – 8.30 am. Sighting lap 9 am. Thunder at 10 am. The pitt area and starting/finishing area is right next to the Upper Horton Club. Camping areas are next to the river or on and around the Rodeo ground which is across the road from the club.
Once the race is over presentations are made then we all go sit in the river, drink beer and cool our Nads. While the race is on two local brothers who are mates of mine stand at the back of the club slowly turning a pig and a Lamb on a fire pit enclosed in a big old steel water tank. There is a huge feed on that night and there is usually a band or something banging away throughout the night. Kathy is the bar tender and she is one big cranky heifer but a great stick. When you have had enough you just wobble outa the club and pass out in your swag or tent and get up in the morning for a big cook up of Bacon and eggs. It’s a great little village and the people who live around it are top country folk. There is a huge kids playground and plenty of shade and fishing for Cod or Carp if you want to. You can read a little bit about it here http://www.bingara.nsw.gov.au/index.cfm?page_id=1081
If any of you bulls want to travel up this way it is about an hour and a half northwest of Tamworth. Entry forms are not available at present but will be soon. As soon as they are I will post the website to down load the entry form. You don’t really have to pre enter, you can just save twenty bucks by doing so.
More than happy to help out any bulls who are thinking of heading this way for the Upper Horton Pony Express, just let me know what you want and we will see what we can organize.

I spotted in Trailzone mag this morning that the KTM 300, 450 and 530 all weigh the same at I think it was 109.5kg, that was according the the KTM advert, seems a bit odd to me.

The 300 is 103.1Kg and the 450/530 are around 113.9Kg, all without fuel.

Boony we’ve been through this little excercise before, the DRZ is never 119Kg’s!!! It’s 138Kg.]not disagreeing about the 138kgs kerb weight?? and yeh we have had this discussion previously. What does the term kerb weight mean, what is the katos kerb weight?IE: 103.1 without fuel and a 9.5litre fuel tank which when full should take the total wieght of the 2010.300 to approx 112kg. is that the kerb weight of the KTM?
If so that makes the DRZ 26kg heavier  no wonder I`m` trying to shed a few kgs of it..having said that we have to remember the DRZ is not a race bike with rego like all the other bikes around.

For further info. the KTM 250 SX-F is only 98Kg, pretty impressive. All weights taken from manufacturers respective websites and are based on the latest models.

That makes you DRZ 35Kg heavier than a KTM 300  More than 30% of the KTM’s weight again! I think the KTM weigh pretty much the same as other bikes of the same ilk….[/quote

How heavy is a DRZ any way, always lots of talk on it but whats the wet weight?

sales brocure says 119 kgs dry(i think) and they have 10 litre tanks?

just checked the web site and it says 138kgs kerb weight? what does kerb weight mean????

Boony “kerb” weight means riding weight on the road with all gear and fluids….

Or it could mean if you drop it, it is easier to lift the kerb up than the bike..

I had a roadie that weighed less than that, so i can see why you need it to shed a few kilos’

Well well now we seem to be all on the same channel???????
the weight is the price you pay for a good cheap reliable bike with enough power to enjoy in the bush an I`m just shedding a kilo or to if I can.that road bike would have been dangerous on a windy day at 100kph

I understand the “silk purse from a sows’ ear” emotion Boony, there was a DR400 from the old thumpernats on ebay a while back was ridden by some big name and only fetched a few bucks, woulda been good for parts.
What I’m getting at is there has been heaps of DRZs’ “bombed” and maybe there are some parts out there waiting to be bought …Cheap.

Good luck with it, I’m a bit like TB though is much easier to change a light bikes power characteristics than to make a heavy bike light.
I like the fact i can commute on the old girl daily if i need to considering how far away from town I live. I am hearing everyone about a lighter/faster bike but it the DRZ for me at the moment..BC

I with you Boony, the DRZ is a great bike if you dont mind the weight.]The DRZ was the bike I chose when I decided to take up trail riding 12 months ago, and its the bike I`ll keep for the next 2 years minimum,The weight is a factor and thats all I need to work on now, due to the suspension has bee done,.I could have bought a high reving 450 or bigger but I didnt want to.I recon the DRZ is a great bike for what I need it to do(trails and the odd criuse around in a pony express)The bike has been everywhere i pointed it and if it struggles its rider error not the machine.Thought about the whole pipe but I`m not chasing power!just weight reduction

When I fitted the StainTune header pipe to mine it gave a good boost to bottom – mid range power because it is a bigger diameter than the stock header.
Look into doing the whole exhaust if you can.[/quote
