Ollie, I’ve had a look at some US sites but because to OZ model is different I was confused at what model would fit. The 97-00 RM looks similar but from what I know have a different motor. Can you confirm what model I should be looking for if ordering OS.
Demasi, Ebay is the go for second hand units. $360 seems expensive for a new one but they come with a JD jet kit which is $150 on its own so not bad value.
Mine is 175 main, 45 pilot, JD blue needle on third clip. Kit come with extra 170 and 180 mains and JD red needle which is leaner. Your may be different with the FMF pipe. I was looking at a FMF or Pro Circuit pipe but I’m happy with the performance of the standard pipe and at this stage the money would be better spend on suspension work.
Teza I recon the carby upgrade will solve you run on problem and give better throttle response. I couldn’t fault mine it just worked everywhere, whether I was climbing technical rocks and roots or holding it wide open on the sand flat track.

What`s with all these Yellow Terrors coming out of the closet lately ??? :whistle:Ollie will be finding it hard to contain himself :woohoo:
A mate I used to work with had a 2000 model, and it was a ripper of a bike too apparently.
Yellow is the new Orange Eages. Get with the program.
Demasi, I looked this up recently and the info I got was 639ml per leg. That should get you in the ball park and can play with oil height to suit.
Another benefit I can see of the newer style Dyna Ring and EXP clutches is as they look easy to fit you could easily convert the bike back to a standard clutch for a ride if you wished. It would be possible to have two clutch packs, one standard and one auto and change for the one you desire for each ride.
Ok I got to give the RMX a bit of a workout today. I loaded it up and headed to Pacific Park. I was keen to see how it would peform with the new carby. I have fitted a set of Jimmy Button high bend bars with makes the riding position much better but I have not yet replaced the tyres, they are horrible and well worn.
The rear tyre would struggle for grip on a PeeWee
To cut a long story short the RMX rips. I forgot how much fun 2 strokes are. I was surprised by how much torque it has down low. For those that don’t know Pacific Park it is an area of a large valley that splits in two. The bottom of the valley has a hard pack flat track and as you get further up the valley there are a couple of sand based flat tracks. The Park is used by the local trials club so either side of the valley there are numerous mountain goat style hill climbs and some nice single track up the back of the valleys.
I did some blasting on the sand tracks, was very interesting with the tyres fitted but hell fun. I then began to find some hill to play on. It took my awhile to realise how much torque this thing has and it would pull up most anything I dared to take it up in 2nd. I rode some rock and root strewn hills I wouldn’t choose to take the DRZ up.
I made up a loop which took in both valleys and some technical hills, single and creek ride then just did laps. At the end there was some hills I was doing in 2nd early on I was now doing in 3rd with ease. The carb was perfect. Left the jetting that was fitted by Mainjet. I did play with the air screw. It was supposed to be set at 1 and a half turned out but was more lick 2 and a half. Set back to 1 and a half and it was perfect. No sign of the dreaded run on that RMX owners complain of.
The rear suspension felt good but the front is a bit harsh, I’m recovering from a work related shoulder injury and I will be feeling it tonight, (nothing a little Jim Beam can’t fix)
Al up I’m stocked. The bike rips when you give it a fist full but will torque up hills with ease. Going to throw some new tyres on it and organise a ride up Clarence in a couple weeks.
PS, anybody want to buy a DRZ400E?
Some good inf on this thread. I think the newer style Dyna Ring and EXP clutches, with there more affordable pricing and simplicity of fitment will help make auto style clutches become more mainstream.

Oh and the Honda passes the KTM

I got arm pump just watching that.
If that doesn’t work Eags can I suggest two or three decent dobs on each, then a small bead around the edges to keep mud & grit out from between the two,,,,, then leave a small gap at the bottom of the bead to let any moisture out if it does get in,
Got some long overdue maintenance done on the RMX today. Pull down the rear suspension, cleaned and greased all the swing arm and linkage bearings. Looks like it has been a long time since the rear wheel was been off. The axle took some massaging to get out, would of been interesting if it was out on the trail changing a flat.
Replaced the ugly ADR headlight with a proper RMX unit. Added some high bend bars, new grips and removed the Barkbusters putting the original hand guards on. Pulled the blinkers off for now as it wont be getting registered just yet.
Plan on taking my young bloke out to Pacific Park on Wednesday to give the RMX and DRZ a run.

I think the Dyna ring (Lefty’s) is only an anti-stall device. It auto engages from a stationary position but once moving you still have to use the clutch manually. But then again most people don’t use the clutch going up gears anyway so the Dyna ring is a good way to go. Also I don’t think the Dyna ring has the adjustment that the rekluse has. Rev-Loc have there own auto clutch which I was told a couple of years ago was a better system than the rekluse. Rekluse just marketed their’s better.
With the rekluse you can adjust the engaging rpm and also the engagment rate.[/quote]
Thanks Mal, that makes sense. I don’t think I would need a fully automatic clutch but one that would not stall on hills and when you jam on to much rear brake in corners would be nice.
The Rekluse looks like an awesome but of kit but like most I balk at the price.
STM, thats for their top of the line LT kit. They have a number of different kits some hydro others cable. The Dyna Ring kit works with cable units. Dyna Ring price listed for my DRZ or RMX is $399.
Can someone explain the difference between the Rekluse and the Rev-lock clutch. Reading Lefty’s review of the Rev-lock and STM’s review of Rekluse they appear the same. The Rev-lock looks like a much simpler design and is less then half the price of the Rekluse. Also has the added benefit of being able to adjust it up to clutch start the bike if need be.
Is there anybody that has ridden both who can confirm they do the same thing all be it in a different design?

Will know how good it is once I hit the bush, maybe next week some time. Feels good so far.
Well I called Mainjet Motorcycles on Wednesday and spoke with Leah. He was very helpful. I ordered a 38mm Keihin Airstiker prefitted with a JD jet kit, $359 with free express post. Was on my doorstep Friday. Awesome service.
Old vs New. The big difference is the idle screw is now separate from the choke. It’s hard to see but the black screw circled in yellow is the idle screw.
A got time to have a play in the shed this afternoon and got the new carb fitted. Took a bit of modifying the cable as I also fitted a whirlpool throttle assembly.
All fitted fired up with a couple of kick. Once it was warmed up a couple turns in on the idle screw and the RMX was idling nice and would cleanly rev with the crack of the throttle and setting back to idle.
Once warm, only takes a little bit of throttle and fires up first kick. As it was getting late and was now dark outside I only went for one run up the street and back but felt good. I’m now looking forward to getting the RMX out in the dirt to see how it goes.
