I’ve now got the cover off and the faces all clean. All looks good in there to the naked untrained eye. Now to put the new gasket on.

    A) Do you use gasket goo or put it on dry?
    B) Is the best procedure to put the gasket on the bike and then slide the side cover towards it or put the gasket on the side cover first then mount the whole lot.

    Thanks.

    Get some

From Repco or the likes, spray both sides and let it go semi dry. Fit the gasket to the engine case and put the cover on.

Some gaskets work dry, this stuff works great and is easy to apply being a spray. Dry I have seen to many bike engines rebuilt that weep and it looks shoty IMO

Yeah cheers Rocket. Got some updated Track info tonight from my uncle up there, this has seen some major route changes for the better I must say :woohoo:

I have done a new route and converted it so it now fits on both my Garmin 62 and Zumo ;) I have also added a new suprise for the guys :P

Bike is almost finished, new chain, wheel bearings, tyres, front pads, coolant, changed the accessory wiring pickups, fitted another 3Br from Adventure Moto, new swing arm chain slider, tie wired the grips etc

Needs an oil and filter change, all the air filters serviced, and the new suspension bearings fitted next weekend. Can’t wait for this trip :woohoo: :woohoo:

    Are we there yet

Awesome write up FF that’s the sort of info people need and want. I did question the improvement of my bag by 15 degrees which is why I bought the 15 over the 5 or 10 they offer also.
As I don’t seem to feel the cold and the next ride is Cape York where it will be between 28 and 15 degrees I will just pack it for Justin (just in case  )
Nothing worse than a nights sleep when you’re on the edge of cold. Sunny Corner was freaking cold! Thanks again for the write up

    Go team APC :woohoo:

With Steve is fine SJ I will get it rebuilt and it will be there for anyone to use. Reckon if you don’t seize a bearing and sleeve you won’t need one again but. Mine would have failed by now if they were a problem given how it’s ridden, loaded and my fat arse on it. Same for yours Jeffro

On a high load part like that I personally wouldn’t. I’m no materials engineer but that sort of heat is bound to weaken a cast alloy part. If were to choose between that and a genuine part I would pay the money. Rear wheel slamming into rear guard at 100km fully laden – no thanks. Only an opinion….

I know what you are saying Axel although I still reckon done by a professional properly it wouldnt be a problem. We have all sorts of stuff under more heat and pressure than that repaired all the time. Could also have a steel sleeve put in, but I reckon that wouldnt be as strong

Like you say piece of mind with the new one on the outback ride maybe worth while ;)

I will have the old one SJ and get it fixed if youre giving it away

Mine has done 40k, I have just had mine out and apart and besides needing grease badly and some rust all was good. I ride mine for all I can, loaded jump it and generally abuse it for all its worth. I have destroyed the top shock absorber mount bush. It hasn’t really been bottomed as such and I now have a Ohlin’s / Sachs Frankinshock. Mine was fine, not out of round all good. I would bet that the seized bearing and bush had the bearing outa spinning in the alloy relay arm thus causing it to go out of shape. I will show Nick at Teknik’s the pictures and get his opinion but would bet my left nut that’s what happened as I have seen it happen on a RM I think it was. You could have had and engineer shop built that up and rebore it cheaper than a genuine one. I was shocked (no pun meant  ) at the cost of the bushes, bearings and seals to rebuild mine  I must say Brian at Team Moto Blacktown has worked miracles, thanks Brian

Don’t expect any after sales service from Yamaha head office, they don’t understand support :(

    Good luck with your trip

Did steve just sleep with the reactor ?? Or in a bag too ??

    Nick

“He produced a sleeping that was about as thick as tissue paper. I laughed and said he would freeze to death in his sleep if he got to sleep over the sound of his teeth chattering. Cool as he produces this thing called a Thermolite Reactor Bag Liner and says happy days”

I guess I should have added he then put the reactor liner in the tissue thick sleeping bag

I have been told you can on warmer nights use it on it own, put its as thick as a tee shirt yet works in a bag.

I like the fact that now I can take my summer bag (its tiny) and use it all year round

I would buy a gasket Roy, making one would not only be tricky given its shape and size it would increase the chances of a leak. If it does leak it makes the cheap arse repair take twice as long
I am all for short cuts but not being cheap, its ok when you ride around your own back yard (area) but if you travel for a ride or have a red hot go well it isnt cheap in the long run IMO

As for the clutch, well a clutch is so easy to do and quick (like 20mins) I wouldnt bother at this stage run it for a bit longer
