Lefty wrote:With over 200hrs and almost 7600km of trouble free (almost, kill switch failed Coff’s ride last year)off road riding it is time for a rebuild. I have noticed lately that the old girl has been using some oil and when they only hold 600ml it is a bit of a concern. Having said that I have a CPW oil cooler on my Kato which holds another 450ml but i still don’t want to lunch an engine.
The 08 model was the first of the XC4 engines and has since had some slight engine up grades as you would expect with a new model machine. These upgrades include Piston and Rings due to oil consumption, Oil pump gears and shaft as well as the engine oil pressure pump cover and o-ring due to oil bypass issues which can drain the engine and fill the gearbox. I have probably been very fortunate where as I have never encounted any of these issues and my Kato has run faultlessly.
I will however install these upgrades with theBlah blah blah should have more oil capacity to start with, 08 no different all KTMs are shit boxes, XR has more than 600hrs on it and 48k plus, Chicken’s had 3 times your euro trash
Ok sorry Lefty ol mate. Seriously awesome write up will watch with interest mate sure it will be good and of your normal high standard.

Hey Choot, the hub bearings are 6203 front and rear. The cush drive bearing that probably needs replacing twice to every set of rear hub bearings are 6304
You should really get new seals as well, the bearing shop can help you with them if they are half switched onTB
Teknik wrote:I have built a frankenshock for TB as he was using the stock revalved/resprung sachs shock but he was tearing the lugs off the spring adjuster. Given that it’s ridden more like an enduro bike it was the best answer to get a stronger body/cylinder head. No one else has done this to a Sachs shock so i don’t think it’s a big problem, there are not many TB’s out there….

guess you got to do what you got to do
I missed your pst originally sorry but I have had patchy Internet coverage being awayTB
Buy a helmet that fits now champ, only got one head and maybe only one chance buy one that fits like it’s supposed to not like it’s modified to  you can use the new one when your hairs short and the other when it’s long. A helmet is cheap when it saves your life
Only my opinion

Thanks Mick, I am away at the moment and couldn’t help. I was hoping Nick could but remembered he is away also

Service intervals would be my problem with the XR, I have a XR650 also, not only oil changes but wheel brgs etc as they only have a two bearing rear hub and bearing life is limited. Comfort would be a thought as well, don’t get me wrong I love my XR more then my Tenere but not for long distance ADV riding. As far as servicing goes the Tenere has 10k service intervals, not that you would do 10k between services or I wouldn’t but the option is there if you know what I mean. With the Cush rubbers well I don’t know because most people are getting 15k or so out of them it’s Nick and I that only get 4k
Try taking a DR and a Tenere for an hours ride before you buy one or the other that will sort it I reckon
