Hi AD and welcome. It’s a freakin nut house for sure here sometimes
hey put of interest how did you find your way over here?TB
Cont.
I whipped the head down to Teknik’s has they do cylinder heads as well unknown to most. Nick stripped the head straight away and put the head in the hot wash while he bead blasted the valves so we could inspect them.
Removing the valves

Cam, buckets and collets

Nick bead blasting the valves for inspection

It’s very hard to show the valves and the wear with a little camera

The sealing face should be flat, as you can see it had beaded and is dished
The valves seats below should be flat like the valve face should but isn’t, naturally if the valve face is dished the seat it’s wearing partner will be the same. The camera doesn’t show it but the seats are rounded.

The other component of interest is the automatic decompression setup on the exhaust cam and how it works seen here on the exhaust cam

A video on how it actually works, the speed it throws the weight out and stops opening the exhaust valve is about 700rpm

Sorry for the delay as I took the head down there the day i took the head off but have been flat out and hadn’t loaded the video etc
More when I get the head back and put it back together

I am going out to do a recky for the Camerons return trip and am aiming to do 600ks on saturday 546kms off road if it works outTB
I got a set of Barrett produced racks for my Wolfman bags and thought I should say how happy I am the racks but more importantly the service and support form both Adventure Moto and Jason at Barrett exhausts.
I have the pre production set Jason produced, Nickj purchased a set of the production racks and had both of them break on the recent 3 states ride. The racks breaking wasn’t good but Jason and Steve’s support has been great. I rang Steve from Adventure Moto on the Sunday when they broke. Jason rang me on the Monday and Steve had contacted him. Jason asked where we were and said he would contact a welder in Jindabyne and have the racks welded to get Nick home. We decided it would be better to take the racks back for Jason to see how and exactly where they were broken. We stopped in at Jason’s the Thursday and spoke with Jason. Jason was upset they had broken and was concerned our trip had been affected by the racks breaking which we said hadn’t. He had a new set of the same racks there he wanted to fit so Nick could continue the trip and that he would replace with the next batch of modified racks, he listened to what we said and thought should be changed to make the racks better and stronger. Last week I got my racks modified to the latest spec including a back brace. The top mount plates was where both Nick’s broke ( mine didn’t as the pre production ones had thicker plates ) well the plates have been replaced with even thicker material again
Top mounts

Back support bar
.
Thanks Barretts, Jason and Steve
One thing for me regarding this whole experience is that had I purchased my racks OS the quick service and support wouldn’t have been available I do like to support local, I know it’s hard with the dollar at 1.10 but for me this helps

Pezz I maybe able to help you with any or most questions or things you do with that if you get stuck as I know my way around a DR pretty well, don’t own one but have fiddled with a few. I have one apart now that has been dusted and I have the head off.
Steve from adventure Moto reckons you are an alright bloke so that’s good enough for me, can do house calls but you need to have you fridge setup right
Check the DIY section there is some DR stuff there with more to come in the next couple of weeks as I finish off the two I have here in pieces

Mal and Medogrocket have that under control I dont know but if its over 100kms I will have the fuel ute meet us for a splash and dash stop. Thats another reason a 20litre will be needed for every bike, because there maybe a splash and dash stop both days and you have to refuel from your Jerry can on saturday night
