Call me hardass, TB said something a bit silly earlier, “the industry that supports us” the INDUSTRY does not support us, we support the industry and the face of that industry may need an overhaul, SOME shops support a select group of riders, but that in itself is not an industry, just a small portion of it.

OK Hardass, I will clear up what I meant, there are shops supporting / helping / discounting for us OBT members. Other shops some people deal with like Nickj’s example in Grafton throw bits and pieces his way they scratch his back and he scratches theirs. I hope that helps, I liked the cnr shop BTW and still support mine.

So much for the rest of us and our shop we are happy with then eh :P  :P

It is an industry, we need it (we all do at times) and it needs us. Yes there will be changes and we and they will adapt

    Silly eh :S

I would go to a bike mechanic one who repairs bikes and not sells them.. 2 or 3 in my area… I know them well and have had a few things done by them in the past…

Krusty nearly everytime I work on your bike you bring up the story and bitch about getting ripped with the WR  Remember

Its a two way street, sure we need to know we are getting value for OUR hard earned, but sometimes you have to invest in a future

I dont shop at two shops in particular and would miss a ride if they had what I needed but that’s my choice, this is all about choice but let’s all think about all the sides to the argument and why somethings are the way they are

I disagree as Ebay is now a huge factor in deciding where people buy from…. What specific factors are you limiting this conversation to? The title says “Buying Gear from OS, right thing to do?”

Owning a bike shop as compared to an ebay shop which can and are run from someone’s house are two different things

I a bloke I know that is on our site does the e bay thing, he imports two mufflers at a time, three jerseys on another order, couple of helmets another order etc (doesn’t pay import taxes saves him a heap marked as gifts) he doesn’t pay staff, doesn’t carry warranty, and the administration costs involved with those things, he doesn’t have much stock, doesn’t have a floor plan only really services his needs (his pocket) His costs compared to a bike are nothing, he doesn’t pay his share of taxes etc so he can do a few here and there cheap. He also can’t get special stuff, doesn’t like taking stuff back and certainly cant try shit on in his virtual shop

E bay won’t be in there in Broken Hill when the rain clouds are coming and Krusty needs a pair of pants  its then back to the bike shop, the industry we take from but don’t give back to.

Have I shopped O/S yes, couple of years back, the famous polka dot jersey was in that order. Did I save money, yes some. I did it because I liked the jersey and NO ONE shop I was dealing with at the time would help me get one. I tried hard to get one, also my knee braces were in the same order and saved me 500 bucks, but I spoke my piece at Ballard’s about that, left the shit I wanted on the counter and walked out. Braces are now comparable in price, but remember the numbers I mentioned before we just aren’t a big enough population to go dollar for dollar.

I on the whole am happy enough spending local 99% of the time as I know the shops I use are doing the best for my dollar. If you arent shop O/S

Local shops are governed by the importers more than you think. Volume is what the O/S shops have look at the countries numbers, volume for them means better buying power which means better prices to the consumer which means more sales which increases their demand which increases their volume which improves their buying power, get it.

There is a difference though between what we pay and what they pay, for a dealer there would be additional taxes like import duties that the personal buyer is exempt from.

Exactly Jeffro but no one remembers that, have you noticed that your overseas package from BTO or the likes is listed as a gift on the shipping invoice?

However when there is a substantial difference between suppliers the question has to be asked. All anybody wants is a fair deal and not to be shafted, but if a part over here is $147 and the same part from the US $92.00AU delivered, it makes you wonder.

Loyalty (for lack of a better word) is a 2 way street

    cheers Hatto

Question your dealer Hatto I have, I have seen the invoice that they paid for my purchase before turning it onto me and there isn’t the mark up in it I thought there was it’s the importers that are getting rich, why do you think they lock up products with restrictions to O/S sales. A few years ago you couldn’t buy a Leatt in the states and have shipped here, cost difference was nearly $400

My thinking is now that my buying power is OK, I and others here get looked after. I want an industry here for me and my kids in the future so I am happy to support it. Plus when I need something today I know that my shop will have it or will return the support favor and help me. If you purchased everything O/S and went to the shop to buy a bike or boots because you need them this weekend would you still expect them to discount and help you?

They are a great tyre, real good in the wet on the bitumen and will handle a dirt road or 3. Front, 90/90/21. Rear, 13/80/17 for your NX mate, ring Jay @ Sutto’s 47379566 tell him Greg sent you and you are an Old Bull he will hook you up.

    Boony

It’s all to do with space Boony, if there is something in the space like the coarse foam well mud, leaves and crap can’t fit in the space occupied by the foam can it  Its not normal foam either

Works so well I purchased one for the XR ;)
