You can buy rims and actually SM Pro rims in Australia cheaper then that Krusty. Good rims ask around, I still have my race set, they have been around done Condo’s, Yellow Mountain’s, AD4E etc and 15,000kms of trailriding. Have taken my Yokos of and gone back to the SM Pro’s now. Crash runs them good gear IMO
PS never heard of warp9

I have just had 10 days with nothing better to do then research this question. When I returned from Hospital I wasnt sure the Tenere would be going not because of my accident (wasnt the bikes fault) but just because I had started pondering. We arent riding the big rig track or the likes where the sand dunes are SAND. I reckon the comfort of 300 plus kms a day will be better on the Tenere then the XR. I dont reckon there will be any real SAND dunes as such and the bigger bike will make the days better and more relaxed at camp or the pub
Looking through all the links again I dont see where the going will be that tough and the smaller bikes would be essential unless we end up in Dakar dunes  but thats not going to happen

Quote:I have done a heap of tyre research for this ride and am still not sure of the best rubber for the Drz.
I am looking at the Michelin Baja and the Dunlop 606. Both from recommendations.Everything I read on the Baja seems ok but no- one seems to be getting very good mileage( mixed distance from 800km to 1500km) I need 2800km minimum.
The 606 sound better for the mileage but some say a bit to road orientated.
Anyone had first hand experiance with these tyres riding the terrain in this trip.
( I normally run the Dunlop geomax 51 and love them but they’re not road legal and I would like valid insurance on this trip!!!!)
Nickj
606 will do the miles as well Nick. I saw Bajas do well over 3500km up on DR400’s, XR400’s and XR600’s on our ride up the cape in the 2004. It was in the end of Oct and was plenty hot.
You will work it out, tyres are very personal, style and preference. My bike came with a 606, its done less then 3000kms and its stuffed but thats a bigger heavier more powerful bike (and Mal at Sutto’s says my riding style does wear them faster then most people  )

Quote:I think you will find under the new regulations most dirt bikes get a drop in premiums, it’s only those between 225cc and 300cc that go up. With the biggest selling dirtbikes being in the 450cc range it’s good for most of us.If you were paying over $400 for your greenslip you were getting ripped off and should have shopped around more. My last rego under the old pricing was $360, Thats for inner metro, those in outer metro or country should be cheaper again. Next year my greenslip will be even cheaper. Why would I or the majority of over 300cc riders sign such a petition.
I personally think the new system makes more sense than the old one. Under the old system a KTM/Husky,TM/Gas Gas 300cc 2T was cheaper to rego than a DRZ/XR 400 yet a crotch rocket such as R1/GSX1000 and the like where similar price to 400/450cc 4T. The new system is better scaled.
As for rec rego thats a whole other argument, for me I would still get full rego anyway. I like to be able to ride my bike anywhere any time.
plus one Scott, that is so what I was going to write (but better done no doubt) I agree with everything you have written mate fairer for the mass, IMO
Cheers
