I started the Longest Day ride back in 09 with Boris and Tom Foster and the Hartleys from Sawtell headland , I only made it as far as Bourke , my big end on the 640 Adv was making a severe racket so I pulled the pin , that was at about 3.30 pm so I reckon I would have made the corner by dark ( had the bike played the game ) no wuckers . John Liddel was my riding partner , his rear shock had blown around Narrabri so he pulled the pin in Bourke too . Luckily his other half Annette was at Nyngan with the ute and Trailer so we Limped the 200 km down the bitchy to Nyngan the next day , the 640 kept running but I was expecting it to go bang at any second .

I learned a few lessons that day .

Take plenty of water and drink as much as you can , the wind and heat dry you out more than you would believe .

Make sure your wheels are balanced perfectly , John’s rear shock died from excessive rear wheel bounce caused by an unbalanced back wheel .

Stopping for fuel at the bowser is MUCH quicker than filling from a jerry can unless you have a quick fill set up .

Eat as you ride , any long straight run gives you a chance to eat and drink.

The Roo’s west of Bourke are big fookers and think they own the road , there are some big Brown snakes out there too ,if there looks to be a big stick on the road , avoid it at all costs as it is likely to be a King Brown . 👿

I wouldn’t mind joining you guys but I think I have other commitments then .

    Cheers Alan

Cheers for the tips Al :) , pretty well had all them covered expect for the King Browns  The remote fuel stop can be done with fast fills but even with Jerrys it cuts our fuel stops and I reckon that will save time. Dejay and I have already discussed what we can eat all day and other bits and bobs. Wheels are always balanced

    cheers again

Just been fiddling with the route for this ride and comparing my route against Lefty’s and there is less than 4 kms difference in bitumen and 5 kms total in the overall distance   I have a remote fuel dump option lined up if I want and sourced some serious local knowledge. I am actually aiming to get to the yellow bus 131kms west of Camerons to put my peg in the ground :S (oh yeah we have decided to make OBT pegs to put in the ground at our final finish point)

PTW, Dejay and I will be starting at a different location now rather than where BB started, its further in distance but a better location. Not sure what Lefty is up to pretty sure he is organised as he has been working on this longer than us.

Getting pumped for this ride big time :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

From the Australasian Safari web site….

    “Moto

Jake Smith, 24, from NSW won the Australasian Safari moto division as he did in 2009. He held the lead for the entire event on his Honda CRF450X and finished with a comfortable 31 minutes to spare.

With brother Todd Smith, last year’s Safari moto winner, they have a combined seven podiums in seven events in WA on three different marques – Honda, Yamaha and KTM.

Jake said he was still feeling really good after the eight days of racing and was relieved it was all over. “It’s never over ‘til its over so I was taking it easy to get through the cool beach stages and cross the finish line. Having won last in 2009 it’s a really good feeling to win again,” he said.

WA’s Warren Strange, 47, is no stranger to Safari and he rode his Dakar-built Honda CRF450X to finish convincingly in second place, one hour 39 minutes ahead of his nearest rival.

“I’m really happy that an old guy like me can do this! I gave up motocross riding when these guys around me were kids!

“I’ve tried to do quite a lot of events this year in my preparation for Dakar so I’m really pleased it has paid off.”

Warren’s second place win was also a huge personal achievement for him, having had leukemia for 20 years. “I’ve been able to take time off work to train and now I’m following my passion, life’s too short,” he said.

Ryan Inghram, 33, also from WA, achieved a third place podium finish on a KTM450 despite this being his first attempt at the Australasian Safari.

“I’m feeling pretty good with this being my first Safari, it’s the longest event I’ve contested. It was harder than I thought, a tough week. The stages were good, the longer the better for me. The bike’s been great to me too.”

David Schwarz, 42, from South Australia, on Husaberg FE450, has finished in the top ten of the last ten Australasian Safaris. This is a huge achievement for this marathon event. No other competitor has managed more than four and in 2012 he finished seventh outright.

“Ten years of racing is a long time. I’m tired but happy. This year’s stages were great, I really enjoyed it, it ranks right up there with the other Safaris I’ve done. The variation in the terrain and the styles of riding were great and there were some true Safari stages. It was great to go somewhere new.”

The winners of five of the last six Australasian Safaris have won on Honda bikes there were 7 Hondas in the top 10 :woohoo:

As of the end of today which is day 5 Honda are first, second and third. KTM’s Matt Fish blew an engine and Yamaha’s last real hope Rod Faggotter went out with failed wheels bearings ( cant believe they failed wheel bearings there has to be a story to that  )

The video has a couple of good stacks in it and a few good saves as well ;)

Safari competitors tackle ‘tiger country’ in Leg 4 of Australasian Safari

    Date: 26-Sep-2012

When you hear the expression ‘tiger country’, you know you’re a deep into the Australian outback and that’s where Australasian Safari sent competitors today.

The course comprised remote countryside along the Gascoyne River, around the Kennedy Ranges, over dry creeks, claypans and fence lines. It finished in the small community of Gascoyne Junction where the Safari crew has increased the town’s population by 500 percent!

    Moto

Today’s competition saw Jake Smith increase his lead, and Warren Strange – also on Honda – moving into second position after Yamaha rider Rod Faggotter was out of Stage 9 with wheel bearing failure. Vern Strange moved into fourth and continues to lead the Dakar Challenge competition.

Jake Smith said despite the difficult navigation required today, he had no issues.

“I had a good day. The tracks were really technical, it certainly wasn’t easy. It was pretty cool when you dropped down into the range – the scenery was pretty nice.”

Warren Strange said he took the conservative approach today with the interesting track.

“The track was a challenge, I went sideways during the second stage, hit a rock and fell off but am not hurt. I rode conservatively today to maintain my position, to preserve the tyres and the motor.”

Ryan Ingham who has moved into sixth and currently the highest placed KTM rider, said he had a very good day. “The track was very rough and rocky and the bike is going perfect in it.” His manager Don McGrath chipped in: ”Tomorrow he’s gonna have to ride it like he stole it!”

Ivan Erceg on Honda enjoyed the first stage. “I really liked it – it was fast, sandy and along fence lines – those tracks suits me. The rocky stages made me ride more carefully. The bike’s in good nick but I’m not!” he laughed.

Simon Schimmel said he had the best day on the event so far. “I want the GPS coordinates for all these beautiful viewing spots – I want to come back to all these places with my wife. It is like Apache land, they should shoot movies here!”

    Quad

Quad leader Paul Smith said he had an awesome day. “I loved it. I got lost half way through the last stage, it was really technical but that’s the sort of riding I like – it’s keeping me on my toes. I saw two emus today and the scenery is just beautiful – I’m getting the full fauna experience!”

    Auto

John Hederics in the Holden Colorado held his auto lead, now 33 minutes, with navigator Kees Weel, with Production Class entry Rob Herridge and Sam Hill in the Subaru Forrester in pursuit.

Hederics said the second stage was really rough and rocky but the car was holding up well.

“We’re trying to consolidate now and took it easy, we were happy to let other cars go past us. We’re glad to be back.”

Nunzio Coffaro from Venezuela said today was like a movie finale! “There were three cars racing – the Holden (Hederics), The Isuzu (Di Lallo) and the Hilux (Coffaro). But we got a puncture during this time and we changed the tyre and caught up, then the Isuzu got a puncture. We’re using different tyres tomorrow.”

Rob Herridge said they had a rough day on the course. “We decided to take it easy today so we wouldn’t make any mistakes with the navigation, but we still got lost.

“When we found our way again we got caught in someone else’s dust, the frustration set in then we got a puncture but we made up time in the last stage to finish on a high,” Herridge said.

Rachan Trairat and Peerapong Sombutwong in an Isuzu D-Max had a dramatic day with a rollover in the first stage. They were not hurt and the mechanics are working to get the car back on track tomorrow.

The Australasian Safari has a double overnight stop in Gascoyne Junction, which was ravaged by floods in December 2010 with the highest water levels on record. Shire CEO Dirk Sellenger said the community had almost recovered and will soon have a new $7.6million tavern, roadhouse and caravan park.

Tomorrow’s course continues in the region with a 147km stage to start the day circumnavigating the huge pastoral station Bidgemia. Competitors will face a rough overgrown run and flood damaged river plains with many sandy creeks and river crossings. The huge 301km second stage follows a disused road including a stony floodway, fence lines, and hidden rocks. A highlight will be crossing the Gascoyne River finishing with fast flowing rally roads.

The Australasian Safari, from 21 to 29 September 2012, is an eight-day endurance race that sees competitors travel mainly off-road tracks through the outback of Western Australia. The event is known as one of the toughest and most challenging motorsport events in the world. This year’s course will be approximately 3500km through the mid west of Western Australia.
