    – Jake Smith increases lead

It was a long, hard and eventful day on Leg 2 of Australasian Safari with 491km of competitive stages through coastal station country from Kalbarri to Carnarvon, where competing to finish the day and not for a fast time was the order of the day.
    .
    Motos
Jake Smith on a 2012 Honda CRF450X finished fastest in the motos for a second day in a row. He also took the cautious approach, putting him nearly 16 minutes ahead of nearest rivals Matt Fish on a 2012 KTM 500EXC and Rod Faggotter on the 2012 Yamaha WR450F.

“I had a good day, I was making sure I was looking after myself and the bike. Despite the long day I feel good and fresh,” Smith said.

The day wasn’t so smooth for others including Matthew Fish, who lost time in the first stage.

“I had a really rough day, I had a crash early in the first leg and lost a bit of time and am a bit sore but ready and raring to go tomorrow,” Fish said.

Yesterday’s second fastest rider Shane Diener is out with a knee injury and Warren Strange dropped a few places after stopping to help Diener after he crashed.

Brother Vern Strange continues to hold the lead in the Dakar Challenge with Michael Johnson and Brett Cummings in pursuit.

“I had a great day today it was like a dream, the bike is all good. I started today in seventh and finished in fourth so I’m looking forward to tomorrow because it’s similar country to the Gascoyne Dash which I’ve won four times,” Vern Strange said.

Fellow Dakar Challenge competitor Glenn Grundy enjoyed the day’s riding. “It was a lot of work for a Monday! There were a lot of interesting features, lots of gates, nice ocean views and long sandy drags.”

Leading the Quads is Paul Smith on a 2011 Honda TRX00XX with a 28-minute lead over Heath Young on a 2011 KTM. Young said he had a reasonably good day but struggled in the sand.

Tomorrow will see competitors tackling three stages and 410km of what is tipped to be the most spectacular stage of the event in one of Western Australia’s most extraordinary locations– taking competitors through a number of stations including coastal Quobba and Gnaraloo Stations and to the tip of the Ningaloo Reef where there will be river crossings, stunning beach runs, sand dunes and twisting station tracks.

Ok so after some phone calls today this is on eh Pete :woohoo: you have booked a room at the corner for us thanks. I have a route that I put together a few months ago I will start trimming, I will start getting some local knowledge for a few areas that can be improved I have been told tonight.
As you suggested and I agree it is every man for himself on the day this reliefs pressure of the individual to keep up with others if they want to stop and have a rest, fuel, etc. We should make sure we all have a spot tracker but so safety is maintained.

I will start tracking down some different rear sprockets, maybe we need a strategy meeting at St Aburns pub  Although Wisemans or Brooklyn would be better for internet access with planning ;) Thoughts?

Umm I have been thinking about it on and off since last year. I have planned and cancelled my plans a dozen times. Dejay and I even thought about having a crack in June on the shortest day for shits and giggles  . I had my interest sparked by Lefty doing it this year. He has even had an aborted pre-run recently
Last week or the week before I actually rang BB and spoke with him for a while about it, got his thoughts and asked him some questions and left the call not doing it. Now the funny thing last night driving up from Melbourne I realised how much I like the challenge of doing the big miles in the shortest time possible and thought about it again
Chicken and I were on the orginal email list when Tom Foster put it all together. The real longest day ride started from Sawtell near Coffs as you may or may not know but if you are keen and want to retrace BB’s effort I am in this year why not :P Sure its a lot of kms on your bike and there is some bitumen but like I said if you want to retrace BB’s from the mountains here giddy up lets crack on  Love a beer at Camerons :woohoo:
