Jeffro wrote:Thanks everyone for your help, problem now solved.I disconnected the starter button altogether and it still wound over when I conncted the battery so that was it ruled out which really only left the starter relay. I pulled that out and very scientifically tapped it on the bench a few times, hooked it back up and Bingo, no more problem.
Relay eh

More than likely when the starter started playing up the noise was it binding causing a higher than normal current draw that would burn the contacts in the relay / solenoid. Then very soon after they stick in, it will do it again Jeffro so it’s lucky your fitting a new one. (we see it in trucks all the time and the training engines as during testing we really hammer the starter system)

Think about the fact as well Galey that Jason had 20pound in not new tyres because he didn’t have a spare tube and didn’t want to trouble anybody and it’s clear he is one of the better riders around that I have ever seen

Sorry mate going past ATM give me a ring if you want and I can explain how to diagnose it
Good luck

Chris is right this is such an easy fix. The key being left on should have nothing to do with it because it’s on all day when you ride isn’t it?
I would be more concerned regarding the damage done up steam when the starter kept sticking in a few rides ago
Facts are there should be switch signal power at the starter solenoid unless the switch is pushed that activates the battery power fact l. You say the switch is ok well then it’s between the switch and the starter. Disconnect the starter turn it on and work backwards
Tell you what about 7 tomorrow morning I will be going past your place and will happily stop and diagnose it for you if you want. Ring me 0419 421334 after 5 am, I’d your up

The button sends a voltage signal (small wire) to a soleniod or relay (depends on who you sepak to) the soleniod has the main power direct from the battery (big wire) to the starter. My money would be on a faulty relay / soleniod if your testing of the switch is correct
Or the starter soleniod stuck in
Simple terms
The power from the battery to the starter doesnt go through your button because the size of the button and the wires back and forth would be huge.
Just a thought the starter could be stuck in, didnt you have it apart recently

A simple slide down the road can quickly become “Last flight of the Concorde” as grinding metal ignites more than just the imagination.Yeah great fairy tale havent heard of it happening  , look yes it could happen and also with the ugly big safari tank on a 690 or on a DR650 with a safari tank, your 690 with the twin tanks could happen or most bikes in the right circumstanes couldnt it?
I would add that most times you require the use of rotopax for extra fuel range you are traveling somewhere decent and more than one day. You would also require some other odds and sods like clothing etc and then your Andys or Wolfmans will be over your rotopax
Check this thread out for some ideas we carried 4 litres per bike no dramas safely no chance of getting fuel in your camelback either

Ok I will share a secret given to me years ago. These work I know a bloke that can afford / sells all fuel carrying products available on the market and he uses these
CHARLIES TRADITIONAL LEMONADE.. Available from woolworths buy them drink the lemonade and use the bottle, they don’t leak or arent affected by petrol
There it’s out, these work

Yeah the 3 liter bladders are the go don’t need to be filled and don’t hurt when you fall on them
