I had the this moved to general talk as I think it’s the only place for it

I didn’t attend the event but did convey my thoughts as a supporter of the sport and haven’t received a reply yet

The more we as riders play the paper trail game (for want of a better way to describe it) the better off we will all be. It’s a game and the team that dots the I’s crosses the T’s squeaks the loudest will get the oil ;)

TB, Are you including Spot Trackers as well or just the GPS thingy doofa type things that I don’t have.

    Just asking

    Gaz

I think spots are fine as they just update every 10mins which in singletrail or tight going won’t give you every turn or twist. Plus you don’t have to have your tracking turned on. Spots are more of a safety device

    Others thoughts please

Thank you moderation staff for changing the thread title, thank you Bob for highlighting an important and sensitive subject.

I have only been on two paid rides and GPSs werent allowed on either. I myself of all the rides I have run have now only asked twice that GPSs not be bought along and will continue that practice when it is required.

Thanks for the replys. I’m not worried that it’s not a fundraiser. Was just wondering. I also think the sport needs people like John and realistically if they are not making some coin then they will not hang around. Since you said it was okay a few more questions.

Is there a minimum distance the riders have to cover a day and do they get the boot if they don’t make it?

No but you only have two weeks to cover the whole 7000kms so although it’s not a set minimum there is a certain distance if you wish to finish in the time frame

Is there a website I should be looking at instead of annoying you all? I did a bit of a google and there is a bit of a section on the APC website but that was it.

I and most others I think have been following it on ADV rider

How long has the rally been going?

    8 days

I gather from the simpson desert comments this is not the usual route or the first event.

The simpson desert wasn’t reopened in time, the route was supposed to go through the Simpson

Does the entry fee cover your accomodation, food or is this all on top as you don’t really know where you will be staying each night depending on progress.

No the entry fee covered the route that John pre ran three times I think, it also covered a fuel dump in the Simpson only. All your fuel and accommodation was on top of the entry.

That will do me. I don’t even have an adventure bike so it is all for interest sake anyway, no real potential for me entering but it does sound fun.

Once in a life time adventure I reckon, Nickj and I looked at doing it this year

I’ve only just picked this up so sorry for my ignorance. How does this rally work. From what I gather there is a 7000km loop with riders starting from various locations. Is it a race?

No, couldnt call it a race cause it used public roads

I gather the term rally means it may not be a race and also the fact that there are legal speed limits on the roads.

    Correct

Is there rules on how many hours a day they can ride etc?

Yes watched by the spot trackers, can only ride from 7am to 5pm, spot tracker must start next day in same spot it finished

I get the impression you do it as a team, not solo.

No its all on your won but people rode together to help and for support

    What’s it cost to enter.

Around 1200 bucks plus spot and GPS if you didnt have one

    Is it a charity fundraiser?

No John spent shit loads organising, promoting and running the event I hope he made a buck out of the well run event so he will continue doing it. Our sport needs people like John

    Too many questions.

No mate, dont ask wont know if you have anymore ask away if I can answer I will or am sure others will know what I dont

Hey TB, Time for a Rumbo I think however, a very good common sense response that was well delivered.

BTW, I don’t own nor know how to operate a GPS so there.

    Gaz

Its all good Gaz, I lead rides everywhere on every track I know and this is only the 2nd time in 4 years I have asked so it must be for a reason eh? Bob has been on an Orange ride with me before on some other good tracks out there he knows its normally all good.

Bob was one of only two that made it up the big hill, I dogged it and went around

Whats wrong with everyone else’s gps …………………………………
do they gang up and pick on yours or something

The reason is part of the ride is on private land I have restricted use of and the owner doesnt want others coming along anytime without people he knows, he does understand that they may remember their way but he asked I dont use a GPS for this ride or others on the ride either.

It always seems to raise its head when the one out of 30 rides you ask everyone to leave GPSs behind, if it happens so rarely it must be for a good reason. But someone always fights and asks why and carrys on, well it is for a good reason. I dont want to lose access to this land, I have only been there twice in 6 years and havent taken an OBT ride there before. Bob you arent coming on this ride are you I see

Dean is a top calibre rider and this rally would have been a enjoyable ride for him!!
The whole rally seems to be well organised and full credit must go to the crew. I have enjoyed following it on ADV and can see it will be a success and more people will have a go next year.
Having said that I would rather ride 7000 k’s with OB’s and put the money left over to charity, we have enough knowledge here to be able to do a ride like this on a smaller scale of course and pick where we ride and how much tar we do etc etc.
As I said before top effort buy the organisers and I wish them well for next year.

100% on all accounts Boulder. The effort to run this event is mingle blowing and John is a freak to pull it off he deserves every bit praise and more it has been so well doone. I to have followed it on ADV hourly almost, bit am shocked after all the pre event hype about how tough etc it was going to be with so little tar how far people have done thus far.

He is a freak rider, but it still seems too fast to be true hey ?????

John who is running the rally seems pretty happy with it all, so it seems to be legit ;)

It does seem bloody quick, like I said I can’t get to Brissy with an average of 91 and I don’t spare a car. As above John should seem happy it’s an awesome effort to get this pulled together
